375: Why is Your Taste in Wine as Individual as Your Fingerprint? Jordan Salcito Shares the Story
Why did this author start the book with tasting, rather than history, regions or grapes? Was that because you wanted to get right into the sensory experience, rather than maybe some of the drier knowledge? Why is your experience of what tastes good as personal as a fingerprint? When it comes to wine, what do you mean by structure? Why are these important, these structural components? Do you think they matter more than identifying that, that wine's from Burgundy, that wine's from Bordeaux? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Jordan Salcito, author of Smart Mouth: Wine Essentials for You, Me, & Everyone We Know . You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks . Giveaway Three of you are going to win a copy of Jordan Salcito's terrific new book, Smart Mouth: Wine Essentials for You, Me, and Everyone We Know . To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and let me know that you've posted a revi

podcast· 51:29· Ep 594Ep 594: Seb Pradal, The Sommelier Consultant Behind Apple TV's Award-Winning "Drops of God"
If you haven't seen the Apple TV Series "Drops of God", you must change that quickly. This is, in my opinion, the single best wine show/movie ever done. It's not hokey, it shows wine in a realistic and good light, and it's a cool story. The show, whose first season dropped in 2023, won the International Emmy Awards for Best Drama Series and has been praised for its beautiful cinematography, skilled acting, and accurate portrayal of certain elements of the wine world. It's actually based on a Japanese manga series of the same name that was wildly popular. Season one was so successful that Drops of God was renewed for a second season, which is currently unfolding week after week on Apple TV. Season one is still available for you to watch if you missed it. In this show, I sit down with Sebastien "Seb" Pradal, who was the man behind all the wine knowledge in this show. He worked with the writers and actors to get all the facts and details of the wines right. Although he won the very presti

videoNebbiolo | Chillable Red for Aussie BBQ Season
Think red wine is only for winter? 🍷 Think again. Nebbiolo is the chillable red for Aussie BBQ season — lighter in body like Pinot Noir, but packed with flavour, acidity, and firm tannins that stand up to big flavours and fatty cuts of meat. In this episode, Saddler’s Creek winemakers Brett Woodward and Sam Rumpit taste our Single Suitcase Nebbiolo, re-released after an extra year of cellaring for even smoother savoury depth. With bright cherry, spice, tar and roses, Nebbiolo proves you don’t need a heavy red to enjoy rich, umami-packed meals — and in warmer weather, you can even serve it slightly chilled. Nebbiolo has plenty of flavour, bright acidity, and firm drying tannins — making it a perfect partner for fatty cuts of meat, complex umami flavours, and hearty pastas. This grape is finding its home here in Australia, with the structure and character to match both tradition and modern dining. And in warmer months, Nebbiolo can even be served slightly chilled for a refreshing tak

Is wine really as dangerous as headlines claim? In Episode 83 of Read Between the Wines, our host Pierre Ferland sits down with Dr Laura Catena, physician and fourth generation vintner behind In Defense of Wine. Together they unpack the growing war on wine, the World Health Organization messaging, and the role of Movendi International in pushing a zero nuance narrative. podcast· 30:47· S5E3Chablis Explained: Petit vs Chablis vs Premier Cru
If the world’s best wines from France aren’t using oak… why do so many Chardonnays in Australia and the New World taste so oaky? In this episode of Got Somme, Angus O’Loughlin and Master Sommelier Carlos Santos take a deep dive into Chablis, the purest expression of Chardonnay. We blind taste three bottles from the same producer and vintage at three price points — Petit Chablis ($40), Chablis AOC ($48), and Chablis Premier Cru ($78) — to find out whether price really does equal quality. Along the way, we break down: Why Chablis tastes like oyster shells The difference between Petit Chablis, Chablis, Premier Cru and Grand Cru Left Bank vs Right Bank of the Serein River When (and why) some producers start using oak The real meaning of minerality in Chablis Whether Premier Cru is actually worth the extra money Angus kicks things off with a blind tasting challenge… and shockingly out-tastes a Master Sommelier to start 2026 in style. podcast· 1h 06m· Ep 90090: Old Vines and Argentina's Ungrafted Massale Selection with Dr. Laura Catena
Some of the world's most valuable vineyard lessons are rooted in vines that predate modern viticulture. In this conversation, we are joined by Dr. Laura Catena to explore Argentina's remarkable legacy of old, ungrafted vines and what they reveal about vine genetics, site expression, and long-term resilience. Drawing on her experience, Dr. Catena explains why phylloxera never devastated many Argentine vineyards and how this unique history allowed ancient vine material to survive. The discussion dives into massale selection from old vines, highlighting why genetic diversity matters — especially as vineyard owners contend with climate stress, disease pressure, and the limits of clonal uniformity. We also examine the role of Argentina's high-altitude growing regions and how elevation influences vine physiology, flavor development, and vineyard health. These extreme sites have become a living laboratory for research, helping match plant material to specific conditions and improving long-ter
