videoValtalina Italy Marcel Zanolari Off to the Vineyards
Valtellina Valley Italy, a Bio dynamic winery featuring Marcel Zanolari Marcel Zanolari met us in front of the Hotel Campelli in Moia, which overlooks Sondrio at the center of Valtellina. This is the Northern part of Lombardia, Italy, a valley between the Alps and just across the border from Switzerland. Michael and I, along with fellow wine writer Gwendolyn Alley jumped into his little hatchback Audi and sped off to the east end of Valtellina. We would spend part of our day with Marcel and part with Marco Triacca. Marcel's vineyards are past Valgella, in the Valtellina Superiore region near Tirano on the far east end of the Valley. He has vineyards in Bianzone, Villa di Tirano, Tirano, Vangione, and some in Teglio that are at almost 900 meters above sea level. 7 of the 12 hectares that he has planted with grapes are rented. Five of those hectares are cultivated with PiWI, resistant grape varieties. They also have contracted property near one of their vineyards to manage olive tr

Emily Howard: Oral History Interview
This interview is with Emily Howard of Hayward. In this interview, Emily talks about growing up in McMinnville, discovering wine, and helping to open restaurants in her hometown. Emily talks about her first job in hospitality at Pizza Hut in McMinnville. She immediately fell in love with the fast-paced energy of the job and the variety of people she met and worked with. Emily discusses becoming the wine buyer for El Gaucho in Portland. From this experience she began to focus on food and wine rather than restaurants in general. She spent some time working in London and Seattle before moving back to McMinnville and opening Thistle. Later in the interview, Emily talks about meeting Kari Shaughnessy of Mac Market, and working together to open Hayward. Originally, Emily worked to design service protocols for the employees, and later she took on wine buying responsibilities as well. This interview was conducted by Rich Schmidt at Linfield University’s Nicholson Library on October 14, 2025.

Desperately Seeking Better (NA) Beer
I often wonder how to rate or judge non-alcoholic beers and then communicate in a way that people who are looking for NA options can understand. Realistically, the depth of the field isn't the best and there is a wild chasm between great and good, even more so between mid and bad. I guess it's a young(ish) industry that will need some time to really find its legs, if it can be profitable enough to force quality to the forefront and not just an add on to entice the DD to stick around so everyone can have a few more Pints before heading home with a six pack or two. Even some of the breweries that are entirely focused on making NA beers can have terrible products side by side with some really fine offerings. The lack of quality control, coupled with an uneducated and/or desperate consumer base has made for a rush to market for a lot of things and an acceptance of that's just how things are...but I think there is a real opportunity as we move forward in the Sober and So

videoLa Perla, Marco Triacca Efficiency, innovation and legacy in Wine Country
La Perla, Marco Triacca - Efficiency, innovation and legacy in Wine Country Valtellina Italy We first met Marco at the tasting in the Consorzio Valtellina cellar in Sondrio. Marco Triacca stood in a striped sweater behind his table, smiling and ready to pour his wines and tell you about them. He is Swiss and, in fact, lives in Switzerland, commuting to Valtellina each day to the vineyard and winery. He is thorough and organized, the workings of his winery timed beautifully like a Swiss watch… Marco makes 4 wines from just 2 varieties of grapes, all grown on his 3.5 hectares of vines at his estate vineyard in Valgella, producing 20,000 bottles annually. He harvests the grapes for his sparkling Pignola in mid-September, his Sforzato of Nebbiolo harvests at the end of September or beginning of October; his Valtellina Superiore La Mossa harvests mid-October and the Riserva Elisa that harvests mid-November. Marco says with a laugh, "I have no harvest stress!" Visting the Vineyard As y

People's Court Ep.05: Furry Fiasco
Hey — this episode unpacks a vacation that went horribly wrong: a 37-year-old narrator brings her partner, toddler and a 16-year-old dog to visit her parents, who are openly hostile to the aging pup. They repeatedly put the dog outside, dump its water, and make cruel comments about putting her down. The partner withdraws and spends time apart to protect the dog and avoid blowing up, while the narrator freezes because she's conflict-averse and has a fraught relationship with her dad. After they get back, family gossip paints the partner as rude, and the narrator is left asking who the biggest asshole really is. We cut right to it: the parents are the main problem. Depriving an elderly, anxious dog of water and comfort is cruel, and their passive-aggressive escalation — plus the mom's cruel comments — crossed basic lines. The partner's quiet protection felt reasonable, not disrespectful. If you were my friend, here’s the real talk: set boundaries. If your parents can’t treat your dog and

Competition in the Beverage Alcohol Industry Under the Microscope – Part 2
Activity and chatter around President Biden’s executive order on competition continues to grow.[i] As you recall, of the 72 action items in the executive order (EO), two involve alcohol beverages.[ii] Essentially, the first covers consolidation in the industry at all tiers and the second covers whether the current unfair trade practice rules impede or pose obstacles for new entrants into the tiers. The Treasury Department is tasked with submitting a report on consolidation to the White House within 120 days from the date of the EO and Treasury and the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) are tasked with submitting a report on unfair trade practices within 240 days. Consultation with the Federal Trade Commission and the Antitrust Division of the Justice Department is required.
