Torcolato: The Prized Dessert Wine of Breganze with Maculan
Earlier this year I attended a virtual tasting hosted by Studio Cru featuring the wines of the Maculan winery located in the Veneto wine region of northeastern Italy. Angela Maculan , 4 th generation operating the winery today, walked us through several wines that the winery produces with a fantastic overview of the territory. I want to focus on a special dessert wine, Torcolato , that I had been unfamiliar with prior to the tasting. Torcolato is not only a special wine that Maculan produces , but it is also unique to this particular area of the Ve neto , with in the territory of Breganze . About the Maculan winery The Maculan family ’s wine beginnings started with the great grandfather , Gaetano, whom used to sell wine that he made at his little osteria in the 20’s and 40’s. During World War II his son, Giovanni, started to make wine with his father to provide it for the army station . In 1947 Giovanni decided to start and build the wi

podcast· 55:00· Ep 598Ep 598: The Médoc and the Haut-Médoc of Bordeaux
This week I cover the regional AOCs of Medoc and Haut-Medoc, which wraps up our exploration of the Left Bank of Bordeaux. These two areas can cover a lot of ground, but they are usually used for discreet geographies in the north and south of the Médoc Peninsula. Because each AOC is so large and varied, I do a deep dive into the whole of the region and then into the particularities of the smaller Médoc AOC in the northwest of the Médoc and the Haut-Médoc in the south, around the city of Bordeaux and to the west of the communal appellations (Margaux, St. Julien, Pauillac, and Saint Éstephe). I review the history, geology, terroir, grapes (including the new grapes for exploration and the new WHITE Médoc AOC as of 2025), wines, and recommended châteaux. podcast· 59:10· Ep 499From Bankruptcy to Barefoot: A Journey Through Wine Industry Hard Knocks
This is a true story. in 1989, Michael Houlihan came to my office. He had a vision of wine brand (the story of why he had a vision is crazy in itself). He wanted to create a wine named Barefoot Cellars. He had found the name from a deunct brand and had gone to the owner to ask to buy the name. He also wanted to call it the "Chateau La Feet" of California wine. I was annoyed. After I left, I called my father to tell him this crazy idea, "it will never work" I said. Today, Barefoot is the largest brand in America. Moral of the story: Don't listen to me. Mike Houlihan might be the only guest who walked into a bankrupt winery hoping to collect $300,000, and walked out with the ingredients to launch America's largest wine brand. You'll discover how Mike Houlihan and Bonnie Harvey took their outsider wisdom—and perhaps a little moxie—and transformed bare feet, old tanks, and a rickety bottling machine into an empire rivaling Robert Mondavi and winning over Trader Joe's and Kroger buyers from

Remise en Cercle: Champagne’s Secret to Complexity and Correction
Anyone with a working knowledge of champagne knows there are two fermentations: one to turn grape juice into still wine, and one to transform that wine into champagne. This second fermentation happens inside the bottle and is triggered by the addition of sugar and yeast, a process known as prise de mousse . That, in theory, is where the magic happens... But what happens when the magic doesn’t happen? What if the second fermentation doesn’t take? What if the wine develops oxidative notes that...

In Oregon’s Willamette Valley you will find another of the wineries that are sharing their story for our documentary “Can Wine Save the Planet”. Can Wine Save the Planet is the name of our first Feature Film, but this is a 7-year journey creating a multi-media and experiential path forward, inspiring a younger generation with the tools, ideas, and solutions through these farming methods. We will be following vintners doing the work and telling their stories as examples of the work and determination required to make these changes for the better. We won't be alone. We will be working with other wine writers from around the globe to capture these stories! There will be feature shorts to present at Film Festivals, as well as three Feature Films. The idea is to spread the word! Tell the people that you know about these farming practices. The more people out there looking for Regenerative wines (and foods, and even cloth), the more in demand they will be, and more and more farmers a

podcast· 40:07· S2E20Episode 20: Σε ποια φάση ωριμότητας βρίσκεται το Ελληνικό κρασί;

podcast· 1h 09m· Ep 92092: Vineyard Nutrition Essentials - Nitrogen Fundamentals with Dr. Markus Keller
In this first installment of a three-part vineyard nutrition series, Dr. Markus Keller joins us to break down one of the most influential nutrients in vineyard management: nitrogen. We explore from the ground up. Dr. Keller explains what nitrogen is, where it comes from in vineyard soils, and why it plays such a critical role in vine growth, fruit set, and overall vine performance. While nitrogen makes up 78% of the atmosphere, vines rely on soil processes to convert it into plant-available forms like nitrate. Dr. Keller details how nitrogen influences vigor, canopy density, fruit set, berry size, phenolic development, and even wine quality. The episode also dives into how soil type, organic matter, temperature, moisture, and cover crops affect nitrogen availability. For growers across diverse regions, this conversation highlights why vineyard nutrition strategies must be site-specific. Whether you're managing high-vigor blocks or navigating lean soils, episode one of our three-part se

Ingredients listings and key taste components found in commercial wines
Barrel tasting dark, rich, vividly flavorful Cabernet Sauvignon. Sugar and spice and all that’s nice , as the old nursery rhyme goes. There are lots of nice things in wine, although there are very few wineries that actually print “Ingredients”—that is, additions dropped on top of natural components of wines during the winemaking process—on back labels; ostensibly, because it is felt by most of the industry that most consumers might be shocked if they find out what actually ends up in commercial grade wine. If you are not required to list everything going into a bottle (a circumstance many consumer advocates think should be changed), why do it? I was at one Sonoma County winery’s tasting room just last week, tasting the brand’s signature estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon . The owner explained that over the years she has had problems impressing upon consumers that her grapes are certified organic and the fact that her wines are made in the lo
