Lost in Bruges: How Belgian Beer, Travel, and Storytelling Inspire Bruz Beers
Some beer conversations stick with you long after the glass is empty—and this is one of them. In a recent episode of Rod J BeerVentures , I sat down with Ryan Evans , co-founder of Bruz Beers , and Chris Adams , who works with Bruz on social media, photography, and marketing. Together, they created the mini video documentary “Lost In Bruges,” a visually rich and thoughtful look at Belgium and its deep, lasting influence on beer culture. Belgium has long been a north star for brewers around the world, and Bruz Beers has never been shy about embracing that inspiration. In our conversation, Ryan and Chris shared how their travels through Belgium shaped not only the beers Bruz makes, but also the way they think about storytelling, creativity, and honoring tradition while still pushing forward. We talked about what it means to experience Belgian beer in place —from classic styles and historic breweries to the small moments that don’t always make it into guidebooks. Chris offered insight int

videoCANADA'S OLDEST GAMAY?! Tasting Hillside Winery's 1983 Vines
Today, we're heading to the beautiful Naramata Bench in the Okanagan Valley to taste a true piece of Canadian wine history: Hillside Winery's Old Vines Gamay Noir. Planted back in 1983 by Czechoslovakian refugees Vera and Bohumir Klokocka, this single-vineyard Founder's Block is considered the oldest Gamay planting in all of Canada. Vera planted Gamay because she loved Beaujolais Nouveau and wanted an early-ripening grape — and today, under the guidance of winemaker Kathy Malone, those mature, self-rooted vines produce a serious, cru-style Gamay that is absolutely stunning. While we taste the 2022 vintage here, it's great to know that these incredible vines even survived the legendary January 2024 deep freeze (temperatures plunged to -30°C, wiping out 99% of fruiting buds across the Okanagan). Most likely because Vera's original decision to use self-rooted vines meant they could be re-trunked and saved. Join me as we pour a glass of this juicy, spicy, and historic wine. We'll also t
