Today's video is not only about uncorking and tasting an old bottle of Bordeaux, but I'll also take you through steps that'll help you get the most out of your aged wine. I'll also give you my suggestions on a couple of great choices to cellar away that won't set you back big dollars. For starters, every wine has its own lifecycle; some can be as short as just a year or two, others can extend out for decades. The focus here is on Bordeaux. An iconic go-to option for being plentiful, available at a wide range of price points, and, if chosen well, with a track record of longevity. It often comes down to choosing the right producer from strong vintages. Storage Good storage is vital, but it needn't be overly complicated. Costco versus Trader Joe’s versus Total Wine
Today's video focuses on Chablis; for me, it's the purest example of Chardonnay from anywhere in the world. I'll taste three examples of Chablis AOC or sometimes called village-level Chablis. The wines are from three of the largest wine retailers in the US. I picked up a bottle from Costco, Trader Joe's, and Total Wine. All three wines are priced around $15 per bottle. A bit about Chablis: it's an outlier in Burgundy, resting at the far northern end of the region, not all that far from Champagne. Chablis at the village level offers some of the best values from all of Burgundy. It's typically plentiful, accounting for around 75% of Chablis's total wine production. Grand Crus and Premier Crus are some of the greatest wines in the world, but that's a topic for another video. All Chablis must be made from 100% Chardonnay; most at the village level see little to no time in oak barrels. In this video, I'll take you through the steps I've used to taste and evaluate wines over the last few decades. Whether you're in a wine education program, planning a trip to a wine region, or just want to up your wine tasting skills, you're in the right place. To get the most out of your wines, tasting like a pro is a useful skill. But first, there are some basic, but important considerations. White wines are often served too cold and reds too warm. As a general rule, most white wines will show their best at around 10C, aromatic whites a bit cooler. And reds, a bit warmer, closer to 15C, with tannic reds a bit warmer still. High-end glassware is nice, but here I'm using a good, inexpensive, all-purpose glass. Before pouring a wine, it's always a good idea to check the glass to make sure it's free from dust or off aromas. The proper hold of a wine glass is by the stem, away from the bowl.
