Learn to Taste Wine with a Master of Wine
In this video, I'll take you through the steps I've used to taste and evaluate wines over the last few decades. Whether you're in a wine education program, planning a trip to a wine region, or just want to up your wine tasting skills, you're in the right place. To get the most out of your wines, tasting like a pro is a useful skill. But first, there are some basic, but important considerations. White wines are often served too cold and reds too warm. As a general rule, most white wines will show their best at around 10C, aromatic whites a bit cooler. And reds, a bit warmer, closer to 15C, with tannic reds a bit warmer still. High-end glassware is nice, but here I'm using a good, inexpensive, all-purpose glass. Before pouring a wine, it's always a good idea to check the glass to make sure it's free from dust or off aromas. The proper hold of a wine glass is by the stem, away from the bowl. Tasting Opening Price Brunello di Montalcino
Today's video is a tasting of two Brunello di Montalcinos priced at around $20 per bottle. Both are exclusive labels, one to Costco, the other to Trader Joe's. Brunello at this price is virtually unheard of, but here we are with two options. Both are from the highly acclaimed 2020 vintage. Each wine will be tasted twice as part of a single-blind tasting, meaning I know which wines are in the tasting, but not the order poured. First, I'll taste the wines soon after they are opened. Then I'll retaste both after a few hours of aeration. One of the wines is the 2020 Kirkland Signature Brunello di Montalcino, found at Costco. It's a seasonal wine that tends to sell out quickly. It'll be in the lay-down wooden wine bins. The price is up a bit from the last vintage. I picked it up for $21.79 The other wine is the 2020 Poggio Lontano Brunello di Montalcino, sold only at Trader Joe's; it's a limited-release wine, available seasonally. Top French WINE BARGAIN for Under $20
There are plenty of contenders for the best wine value from France, but for me, there is one that holds that top spot. It's a region that I've watched develop over the last forty years working in the wine trade. This video features some flat-out amazing wines, and the best part is that the wines can typically be found for under $20 per bottle. Ventoux is an ancient region that has seriously upped its game. If you know the region, I'll cover some specific wines worth searching out. If you're not familiar with it, this video will prove worthwhile the next time you're out wine shopping. The wines of Ventoux have often been lumped together with the base-level Cotes du Rhone from the Southern Rhone Valley. There are similarities; with both, Grenache usually plays a lead role.
