Chenin Blanc is the world's most underappreciated grape variety. Today's video covers three outstanding Chenin Blancs from three different countries; all are reasonably priced, with good availability. Also, a fourth bottle from my cellar: a rare Vouvray that is over twenty-five years old. Chenin Blanc has been cultivated for over 1,000 years, with origins in the Loire Valley of northern France. Along with France, South Africa is another leader in Chenin Blanc, but it's also grown in many other countries worldwide. It's one of a limited number of grape varieties that retain acidity as they ripen, making them a good candidate for everything from completely dry to dessert-style wines, including sparkling wines. Occasionally, it'll be used in a blend. When it's grown in the right places and given the proper level of care, it's a recipe for good things to occur. Let's get into the tasting. There's an old saying that you have to drink some bad wine to appreciate good wine. In today's market, it's never been easier to find both. Overall wine quality has never been better than it is today; I'd go so far as to say that, from a consumer perspective, we're in the midst of the golden age for wine, yet at the same time, the wine world is overrun with heaps of bad wine, but increasingly a newer sort of bad. Bad wine can mean a lot of things, but here I don't mean wines you don't like. I'm referring to wines with flaws, sometimes faulty wines that are oxidized, with microbial issues, excessive sulphur, or cork taint caused by TCA. Sometimes it's linked to shoddy winemaking. Historically, the problems were linked to a lack of resources, a lack of knowledge, or both. This still happens today, but it's much less frequent. Now, there is a whole new class of bad: it's deliberate bad, and in my opinion, it's much worse than being well-intentioned and screwing up. Good wine is never
