Veuve Clicquot 1982 Cave Privee Champagne Review
Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin is a Champagne house founded in 1772 by Philippe Clicquot. At that time is was called Clicquot champagnes. He retired in 1801 and left the business to his son Francois Clicquot, who has just married Barbe Nicole Ponsardin in 1798. In 1805 Francois died of typhoid. He was 30. His brother, Philippe wanted to liquidate the business but Francois, wife, Barbe Nicole, now a widow (or “Veuve”) decided to run the business. In the 1800s most businesses were run by men and at the time of Francois’ death Barbe Nicole was only 28 years of age with a young daughter. At that time, the Napoleonic Code prohibited women from working, voting, earning money, or entering schools and universities without the consent of their husband or father. But widows were the only women in French society allowed to run their own business. Despite incredible backlash, she proved to the male members of family that she was capable of running the business by completing an apprenticeship cour

Portfolio Tasting of Haywire Winery + Winery Tour
Haywire Winery was purchased in 2005 by Christine Coletta and Steve Lornie. It was originally growing fruit but they replanted their Switchback Vineyard site with Pinot Gris grapes in 2006. It was originally named Okanagan Crush Pad, but it was rebranded to Haywire Winery in 2023. There are 3 other labels owned by the winery but Haywire would be the flagship label. Haywire is known for championing minimal-intervention, texture-driven wines. No oak (other than neutral oak) is used for the wines. I was pleased to visit the winery and taste the following wines: Haywire 2018 The Bub Haywire 2023 Pinot Gris Haywire 2022 Chardonnay Haywire 2022 Pinot Noir Haywire 2025 Merlot King Family Vineyard Narrative 2022 Rose For more information about the winery, please visit their website at https://haywirewinery.com/

Special Lunch With Subscriber and Friends Featuring Chateau L'Evangile Vertical
This was a special lunch with my subscriber and friends. I donated a bottle of Chateau L'Evangile 1961 to the Bacchanalian Wine Gala Auction and made a special offer to my subscribers: if a subscriber bought the bottle and was prepared to open it with me, I would treat them + 3 friends to dinner + serve them the 2005, 2017 and 2018 L'Evangile. In addition, I would give them a 1 oz pour of the 1840 The Rebel Madiera. Well....a subscriber did buy the wine at auction and took up me up on my offer. He also brough a mystery wine from Brazil and another attendee brought a Pol Roger 2004 Cuvee Winston Churchill. Pretty fun lunch!

First Growth Bordeaux Wine Review: Chateau Haut Brion 1986 (Pessac Leognan)
Chateau Haut Brion's (pronounced "O Brie On") name is derived from the Celtic term Briga, which means a rise or mount of land. Grapes have been grown at the vineyard since 1426. The earliest mention of the winery in literature is 1521, when it was known as Aubrion. It is probably the oldest continuous winery in Bordeaux. In 1525, the winery was given as part of the dowry when the daughter of the Mayor of Libourne married Jean de Pontac. Jean constructed the chateau on the winery in 1549, which still stands today. In 1666, the de Pontac family opened Pontac's Head, a tavern in England to sell and promote their wines. So when wines were classified in 1855, Haut Brion was well known and as such, was the only wine outside of the Medoc region included in the 1855 classification system. The winery was purchased in 1935 by Clarence Dillon, He died in 1979 but his granddaughter (Jean Dillon) took over management of the winery. She married the Prince of Luxembourg. In 2008, the curre

Review of Black Hills 2024 Note Bene Hiatus Collection
The estate was started in 1996 when the property was bought in a joint venture between Peter and Susan McCarrell and Bob and Senka Tennant. They sold half the grapes to various British Columbia wineries and used the other half to create the first vintage of their flagship blend Nota Bene 1999 (which was released in 2001). In 2007, Glenn Fawcett formed a group of 350 investors, the Vinequest Wine Partners GP Ltd., to purchase the winery for $11.3 million. In 2011, Black Hills acquired the 15-acre Double Black Vineyard, which is one kilometre south of the original Sharp Rock Vineyard. In 2017, Black Hills Estate Winery, Gray Monk Estate Winery, and Tinhorn Creek Vineyards were acquired by Andrew Peller Ltd for a combined total of $95 million. The current head winemaker is Ryan McKibbon. The 2024 Nota Bene Hiatus Collection is made using grapes sourced from the Walla Walla Valley in Oregon is a blend of 43% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Cabernet Franc. It was necessary to u

Emidio Pepe 2007 Montelpulciano D'Abruzzo Wine Review
Description written by Chat GPT The 2007 Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is the kind of wine that quietly dismantles expectations about what Montepulciano can be. Far from the easy, everyday reds the region is known for, this is a deeply traditional, age-worthy expression—both rustic and refined. In the glass, it shows a deep ruby core, still vibrant but just beginning to hint at maturity along the rim. On the nose, it opens slowly and deliberately: black cherry and dried currant lead, followed by layers of baking spice, tar, tobacco, and dried herbs. There’s an earthy, almost feral edge—loam, leather, and a faint resinous note—that gives it unmistakable character. The palate is where it really earns its reputation. Full-bodied yet structured, it balances ripe dark fruit (black cherry, fig, blueberry) with savory complexity—tobacco, spice, and mineral undertones. A bright streak of acidity keeps everything lifted, while fine-grained tannins provide grip without heaviness. Text
