After enjoyin the bottle together they thought they should reach out to the source to unpack what makes this wine so damned good - and why it's such an icon. Ridge Vineyards responded the call by sending head winemaker John Olney to put up with the guys this week while they sipped on the current vintage for sale - 2019. RNV 92: Mitch Rice | Mersenne Wines

In this episode we talk with Mitch Rice, winemaker at Mersenne Wines. This boutique winery chose French Renaissance monk Marin Mersenne as their namesake, to represent their approach to winemaking. Marin Mersenne discovered the formula to find Prime numbers (which is still used today!) and Mersenne Wines believes in finding the perfect, 'prime' fruit to make their wines. This Renaissance man was also one of the first to describe musical harmony, and Mitch and his partner Robin Youngdahl hope to create wines that reflect a harmonious nature. Mitch shares a bottle of his Rutherford AVA Merlot with hosts Coco and Michelle, and blows us away with the complex, inviting style from this often maligned varietal. Parece, e é de fato, um blend da cultura francesa com a alemã - resultado da longa alternância de dominação entre as duas potências. As marcas desse blend estão na arquitetura, com as famosas casinhas coloridas estilo beixamel, na gastronomia, com o chucrute e outros pratos tipicos alemães e claro, no vinho. Marca registrada da região é o sitema de denominação de origem e de rótulos muito mais simples e lógico do que costuma se ver na França. Ou será que não? A influência da lógica germânica parece dominante sim, à 1a vista, mas a gente vai ver aqui no podcast hoje que a famosa lógica francesa marca presença por aqui também.
