One of the fascinating facts in a special podcast on how wine maps are created with wine map guru Chris Foulkes. Chris has arguably more experience in creating wine maps than anyone. He oversaw the 3rd edition of the World Atlas of Wine, published the Bordeaux Atlas and recently Inside Burgundy by Jasper Morris MW and Inside Bordeaux by Jane Anson. Listen in to hear his stories about the challenges he faced in creating the maps, how before Google Earth he employed a young man with a bicycle to travel around the Medoc to check estate boundaries, the deliberate errors inserted to avoid copyright theft, and much more. His latest venture is publishing a special edition print of Jane Anson’s map which for the first time shows the terroir and the position of the chateau, recently launched on her site www.janeanson.com . A Modest Proposal.
The on again, off again Covid-19 virus lockdowns in 2020 caused enormous damage—financial, emotional, and spiritual—to families and businesses alike. And for those of us residing in Napa Valley, we also had to spontaneously adjust our life and lifestyle to the unpredictable power outages and deadly wildfires that delivered the same trifecta of effects, but to an even greater effect. No doubt, anyone who reads this can add their own experience to how nasty 2020 was for them. And for those poor souls who had to bear the unspeakable indignities and inconveniences of being socially distant at backyard cocktail parties and dinners, or picking up curbside dinners at their favorite, near-failing restaurants, or watching their ever-growing hair take on a stylish, new color and look, I would like to make a modest proposal for the New Year that I hope will help leave those unpleasant experiences behind, and get you moving forward positively. My proposal has its roots in an article from the

podcast· 32:23· Ep 42IWP Ep42 Christopher Buckley - Ravenswood, The Blind Boss of San Francisco and Lord of Livermore - Historical Episode
Historical Episode IWP Ep42 Christopher Buckley - Ravenswood, The Blind Boss of San Francisco and Lord of Livermore. Today we are looking at Christopher Buckley and his historic Ravenswood estate. Buckley was a blind Political boss in San Francisco during the latter part of the 19th century. Ravenswood was his 100 plus acre country estate in the upcoming wine producing region of the Livermore Valley. There have been books and articles written about Buckley but they all tend to gloss over the vineyard and wine producing side, giving just the basic information or sometimes mis information or conflicting stories. I’ve tried to piece it all together here from the original sources when possible to give an accurate depiction of his estate, vineyard and winemaking.
