videoCalifornia Central Coast - Seabold Cellars - Collaborative Winemakers - Episode 53
Founded in 2014 by Master Sommelier Chris Miller, Seabold Cellars focuses on cool-climate organic and sustainable vineyards to produce balanced wines that showcase their origin more than their winemaking. During the year, more time is spent in vineyards than the winery. Their winemaking is as hands-off as possible, respecting traditional techniques and practices without being beholden to them. They produce non-interventionist, site-specific Burgundy and Rhône varieties, as seen through a California lens The World Wine Web For more info visit: https://winedos.com/producers/seabold-cellars/

Review: The Devil’s in the Draught Lines
Christina Wade’s book is subtitled “1,000 years of women in Britain’s beer history” and is the Campaign for Real Ale’s contribution to restoring women to their place in the history of beer, with an emphasis on the UK. There’s no better person to tell it than its author, an outspoken historian, beer campaigner and feminist, […]

podcast· 50:02· Ep 577Ep 577: The Wines of South Africa - Refresh
This week's show is on South Africa, a much more historic region than many realize, it has been making wine for more than 350 years. Although considered a 'New World' wine region, winemaking and ethos are often more oriented towards the Old World. Its style often straddles the line between New and Old World, offering fruit-driven wines with minerality, earthiness, restraint, and higher acidity. In this show, I talk about the unique conditions of this country, located between latitudes 27° and 34° south. I discuss the lengthy winemaking history, and how the Mediterranean climate, old soils, and a unique topography create world class wines of mainly Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, and Merlot. podcast· 50:00· Ep 448Ancient Roots, Modern Revival: Exploring Armenian Wine and Enotourism with Lilit Grigoryan
Not of all wine news is about a drop in sales or activity...wine tourism is up. On Wine Talks I regularly discuss the idea that wine is headed back in time to the days where the experience of wine is driving the interest in wine. Winery tastings, wine pairing dinners, day long wine excursions and more are peaking the interest in not only wine enthusiasts but wine novices the same. One destination that is working hard at luring wine travel is Armenia. I have keen interest in understanding the value of and the current climate of wine tourism in my country of heritage. Lilit Gregoryan is on the forefront of the movement and we had a chance to catch up and discuss the current state of Armenian wine travel. I have to tell you, sitting down (virtually, in this case) with Lilit Grigoryan for this episode of Wine Talks was one of those conversations that leaves you thinking long after you hit "stop recording." Now, I'll let you in on a little behind-the-scenes secret: this was our third crack

We rush down the Douro Valley to head towards Spain and get up into the Pyrenees foothills, to Somontano, where we catch up with a long-term friend of the club: Tom Holt. Paso-Primero is his award-winning wine project, where he makes wines, mainly from local varieties of grapes, in a low intervention style but with one guiding star... that they're the kind of approachable, lovable wines that he wants to drink day in, day out, rather than trying to appeal to the Zeitgeist or critics. That's a message we wholly buy into! This Rosado is one for all seasons, not just the summer. With a vibrant, bright colour, it's unashamedly big on flavour and character. We absolutely love this one. So... one last trip to get back to England, and on to London where we think we've done a pretty good job at showing off the incredible diversity of wine in 24 days!!

podcast· 1h 12m· S10E194The Maverick of Moon Mountain: Phil Coturri Reflects on a Life of Complexity
Get ready for a journey through time, culture, and the lush hills of Sonoma Valley on this episode of Beats Vines & Life. Host MJ Towler sits down with the legendary Phil Coturri, a man known as The Godfather of organic mountain grape viticulture and the force behind Enterprise Vineyard Management and Winery 16600. In this colorful conversation, Phil opens up about his roots as a third-generation San Franciscan, growing up during the revolutionary 60s and soaking up the vibrancy of the Beat movement, the Summer of Love, and the rise of Bay Area music. Together, MJ and Phil weave stories that link the evolution of California winemaking with cultural milestones—from early experiments in natural, additive-free wines to wild times with the Grateful Dead, Rolling Stone magazine, and the cosmic transformation that came with psychedelics and free-thinking art. Expect tales about family, food, the joy (and chaos) of farming, the influence of complex microclimates on great wine, and how the rhy
Fogg and Smith have lost time, so desperately try to catch up. After a celebrity offers them a lift to Porto, they razz it up the Douro Valley to try some Port. And who better to go to than Graham's – one of the most historic and legendary producers? And we're not just drinking any old wine. This is their 20-year old Tawny: a real treat. Like Madeira, Port shares many techniques in common – fortification and ageing in large oak barrels for a long time, but the wines are vastly different. We then have to rush up the Douro Valley and on to Somontano to catch up with the wonderful Tom Holt!!

Lydia DeRoss: Oral History Interview
This interview is with Lydia DeRoss of Beyond the Vine. In this interview, Lydia talks about how her passion for wine was sparked and how that passion drove her to leave the world of accounting to join the wine industry. Lydia shares about growing up in Tumalo, Oregon, and starting a career in accounting. After an initial interest in wine, she took a WSET class with Linfield in 2020 in order to learn more. This expanded her palette and encouraged her to try many new wines. Later in the interview, Lydia talks about her excitement to both learn about wine and help educate others on what she was learning. After quitting her accounting job, she started working in a wine shop in Redmond before opening her own storefront. videoWine Advent Calendar 2024 Day 21 – Madeira, Portugal
We brave one of the toughest landings in commercial aviation as we fly from South Africa to the Portuguese island of Madeira, home of some of the world's most distinctive wines. Why? Well, the techniques are really unintuitive! Wine gets damaged by heat and Oxygen... so, instead of trying to resist that, Madeiran techniques embrace it and give it as much heat and Oxygen as they can in the early days! They balance that with acidity, alcohol and a touch of sweetness, depending on where you sit on the scale between Sercial and Malmsey wines. We visit Justino's, operating since 1870, to try a Boal wine, made from the Boal Cachudo grape, otherwise known as Doña Blanca... however, it seems more genetically-related to Malvasia Fina from the Douro Valley. Grape lineage is complicated! Boal sits in the middle on the sweetness scale. It's well "boalanced". See what we did there? Justino's works with more than 800 of the 1600 growers on Madeira, giving it plenty of choice. This 10 year old
