videoWine Advent Calendar 2024 Day 21 – Madeira, Portugal
We brave one of the toughest landings in commercial aviation as we fly from South Africa to the Portuguese island of Madeira, home of some of the world's most distinctive wines. Why? Well, the techniques are really unintuitive! Wine gets damaged by heat and Oxygen... so, instead of trying to resist that, Madeiran techniques embrace it and give it as much heat and Oxygen as they can in the early days! They balance that with acidity, alcohol and a touch of sweetness, depending on where you sit on the scale between Sercial and Malmsey wines. We visit Justino's, operating since 1870, to try a Boal wine, made from the Boal Cachudo grape, otherwise known as Doña Blanca... however, it seems more genetically-related to Malvasia Fina from the Douro Valley. Grape lineage is complicated! Boal sits in the middle on the sweetness scale. It's well "boalanced". See what we did there? Justino's works with more than 800 of the 1600 growers on Madeira, giving it plenty of choice. This 10 year old

How to make an old beer taste better
Last night all I had around to drink was old beer that I hadn’t bothered drain-pouring yet. This made me question how to make these old beers taste better. What can be done? I filtered the results and brought the best to you. Turns out, you will need a French press. I don’t have one … Continue reading How to make an old beer taste better → The post How to make an old beer taste better appeared first on Mikey Top Pour .

videoPresentation of Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru Clos Baulet 2022 Vintage (4/2024)
Since they were first erected by Cistercian monks in 1365, the walls surrounding the Clos des Lambrays have harnessed the harmony of their 8.66 hectares of vines. This notion of the perfect union of the whole persists today and remains Clos des Lambrays’ raison d’être. Over the course of the estate’s 650-year history, the unity of the Clos has not always been secure. The French Revolution saw the vineyard split across 74 different owners, but its reassembly by the Rodier family in the late 1890s was a defining moment in the Domaine’s past, influencing its present, and driving its philosophy, for the future, under the auspices of Groupe LVMH since 2014. In March 2019, Jacques Devauges joined the estate as the General Manager and the Chief Winemaker. Rediscovering the essence and emotion found in the mythical bottles of Clos des Lambrays from the early 1900s, which still impress today after so many decades is the vision of the whole team, and the inspiration driving their daily efforts
podcast· 39:58· S7E2The Jancis Robinson EXCLUSIVE - Part 1
Jancis Robinson is without doubt the leading wine writer in the world today. But what's she really like behind the (highly) professional façade? Join us in this fascinating two-parter to meet the real Jancis: unfiltered, frank and sometimes really quite eye-opening... In this interview, we wanted to do something different from the many other profiles of this wine superstar. For instance, Jancis' wine scores are famously parsimonious, her reviews sometimes brutal (the best she could write about one wine was, 'it's wet'). So does she really enjoy drinking wine? What's she like when she's tipsy? How do her wine friends tease her? How did she cope when she lost her sense of smell and feared her career was over? Does she really think she's 'addicted' to the stuff?! Along the way, Jancis talks about what the perfect wine tasting note might be (it may surprise you); her horror of boring people about wine (and seeming 'bought'); and what she thinks the best value wines in the world are right n

videoWine Advent Calendar 2024 Day 20 – Paarl, South Africa
Fogg and Smith are entering the final stretch, but the distances are racking up – a whopping 38,000 miles so far! They chartered a very rapid yacht to get across the South Atlantic, pulling into Cape Town in style, before heading to the vineyards to explore arguably South Africa's most famous and unique grape: Pinotage – a cross between Consult and Pinot Noir. The legendary Fairview estate, owned by Charles Back II, dates back to 1693, and Charles is South Africa's most awarded winemaker – also winning the International Wine Challenge's Lifetime Achievement award recently. They grow all their own grapes in order to control the quality, and work hard on sustainable practices: both environmental and, importantly in South Africa, socially, providing well-trained, reliable, safe work to an empowered local team. Oh, and did we mention the goats?! Portions of the video © Fairview Wine & Cheese Estate

By Rose Murray Brown MW Published in The Scotsman 30 March 2024 On 2 February 1659, the first wine made from grapes grown in South Africa was crafted by the Governor of the Cape, Jan van Riebeeck. He had planted vines four years earlier in the Company’s Garden near Cape Town from cuttings imported
podcast· 46:40· S1E182Costco Kirkland Signature Challenge: Sonoma County Chardonnay!
Have you ever wondered why American Chardonnay tastes like oaky butter-bombs? Well, you can blame the French! The American style of Chardonnay is not our favorite, but it is super popular, and we explore why, and how it got to be the way it is. We also pit the 2022 Costco Kirkland Signature Sonoma County Chardonnay against some other easy to find and reasonably priced American Chardonnays to see who we think is the best bet for your hard-earned money. In our tasting, we also talk about what foods will pair with this style of Chardonnay, but we’ll be honest, American oaky Chardonnay is not really a great food wine; you sort of have to pick and choose what foods you can have with it. Rather, they are as they say “cocktail wines” meant to be drunk on their own due to their lack of acidity and overpowering structure. We also have a great conversation with listeners the East Idaho Foodies who gave us a name for our wine tribe this week. Wines reviewed in this episode: 2022 Kirkland Signatur
