Cal and Judy Schmidt: Oral History Interview
This interview is with Cal and Judy Schmidt of Schmidt Family Vineyards. In this interview Cal and Judy talk about their journey into winemaking, their background, and how they built their vineyard and business together in Grants Pass. Cal describes his early life, including his time in the military and aerospace before earning a degree in business. He explains how his path eventually led him to working with land, building on property in Healdsburg with 35 acres, and later moving the business to Southern Oregon. Judy shares her background as well, explaining how she studied psychology and spent time in San Diego and Santa Rosa. Together, they talk about their move to Grants Pass and how they developed their vineyard over time. They planted their first acres of grapes in the early 2000s and produced their first vintage in 2004, followed by their first bottled wine in 2006. Classic plus-100-year-old Zinfandel growing on its own natural roots in deep, rich yet porous, sand dune-like soil typifying much of the east side of the Mokelumne River-Lodi AVA As we continue our journey through Lodi's wine history during California Wine Month, we turn our focus to the largest and most historic of the region's seven nested sub-appellations: the Mokelumne River AVA. Spanning an impressive 85,700 acres with over 40,000 acres of planted wine grapes, this viticultural area represents the historic heart of Lodi winemaking and houses nearly all of the region's wine production facilities. Named for the river that flows from the Sierra Nevada through the appellation—originally derived from the Miwok phrase meaning "the place of the fish net"—the Mokelumne River AVA tells the story of California viticulture itself. From century-old, own-rooted Zinfandel vines planted in the 1880s to modern plantings of over 100 different grape varieties, this appellation showcases

In this video, I’m in a traditional ageing cellar in Montalcino, visiting Fattoi to look at how Brunello di Montalcino is matured before release. You’ll see the large oak casks known as botti, often made from Slavonian oak from Croatia. These are used to gently age Brunello without overwhelming the wine with oak flavour, allowing the character of Sangiovese to remain at the forefront. I explain why some producers prefer large-format casks over small barrels, how surface area affects flavour impact, and how this careful, controlled approach fits within the mandated ageing rules of Brunello di Montalcino. If you’re interested in traditional Italian winemaking, oak influence, or how Brunello develops before release, this gives a clear look inside the cellar and the philosophy behind it.
