Muscatel Distilled Gin is a special gin. According to the manufacturer, ripe muscatel grapes are used in the distillation process. Therefore, the first “nipper” should be really pure. Let your thoughts drift towards summer, friends, garden parties.Cheerful, playful, a gin in its purest culture. I myself have the feeling that the grape lends it a little […]

podcast· 28:53· S7E6Ein Schluck Spanien - Teil 1
Hosted on Acast. Old Friends: Leffe Blonde
Dipping into some of the dimmest and most distant of crevices in my drinking memories today for this resurrection of my Old Friends series. Back in the days when I was a college student in Birmingham, I got the train from New Street early one Saturday morning to go to Esher in Surrey. The main purpose for the trip was to spend the day at the Sandown races with my eldest brother, who lived down that way back then. Having spent the day frittering money away on thoroughbreds of varying uselessness, we headed into central London for dinner at a non-descript curry house, non-descript in the sense that I don't have the foggiest as to what I ate, but weirdly 2 beers are lodged in my memory, the Żywiec I was drinking and the Leffe Blonde that was my brother's choice that night. Being a good younger brother, by 8 years, I was suitably in awe of his sophistication and worldly wiseness, and so at some point back in Brum I made a point of trying Leffe, in the comfort of the All Bar One. Given that

videoIs Margaret River The Best Chardonnay Region?
Margaret River, Western Australia - a region known for world-class Chardonnay. Today we're tasting six Chardonnays from the same region to see if location guarantees consistency, and whether expensive wine is actually better. The Challenge: Six Chardonnays, all from Margaret River, ranging from $50 to $150. Do they all taste similar because they're from the same place? Does the $150 bottle taste three times better than the $50? What We Found: Margaret River Chardonnays aren't homogeneous. Same region, wildly different styles - from lean and crisp to rich and oaky, from fresh and lemony to toasty and creamy. Some reminded us of Chablis, others of classic buttery Chardonnay, one even smelled like Sauvignon Blanc. The Verdict: Region doesn't mean uniformity. Margaret River proves you can have serious variety within one place - different winemaking styles, oak usage, and fruit expression all create distinct wines. And expensive doesn't always mean better - the mid-priced wines often del

One Year Later...
I woke up this morning, knowing it's been exactly 1 year since the last time I indulged my inner drunk and had way too many pints, topped off with a big old glass of whiskey. One year since I could barely breathe after going up a flight of stairs or walking to my car and one year since my resting heart rate was somewhere around 170 beats per minute. In those 365 days, I have not let go of reality even once. No slip ups or "accidents", never having more than 2 beers in a single day and no hard liquor of any kind. Part of this is predicated by all the medications I'm on to help control blood pressure and keep my heart from running itself out of beats before my time is supposed to be up. But the other part has become a battle of internal monologues, each vying for supremacy and each with some good points to be made. On one side, we've got the good times Polk, the dr

Time to Let it Go...
An appropriate us for my growlers now, I suppose... I've come to a crossroads in my life and while this particular intersection may seem a little silly, it feels like a momentous, albeit small, decision going forward. I have a lot of beer paraphernalia, bottles and clothing. Mostly bottles and cans I've saved from all the thousands I've tried, about 500 or so that line the shelves and walls of my basement, along with many signs and pictures, various knick-knacks and mementos of the last decade of my life. Here's the thing though, I don't know if they speak to me anymore. I don't know that what they used to represent is what or who I am now and I wonder, quite seriously, if hanging onto these things is holding me back from the next evolution in my life. I know that in the end of it all, they are just things, collectibles to me and my memories and not really necessary to the times they represent. But looking around as the NFL season begins and hoc

videoInside Ribera del Duero: Albillo Mayor, Clarete and Altitude
Climate change is reshaping wine regions across the world. In many places the impact is negative, but in Ribera del Duero the story is more nuanced. In this video, I spoke directly with producers about how climate change, altitude, and extreme continental conditions are affecting their vineyards and wines. We explore why high-elevation sites matter, how cooler nights help preserve acidity, and why some producers believe the best way forward is by looking back. We talk in depth about Albillo Mayor, a historic white grape that was approved as a standalone variety in Ribera del Duero in 2021, and how it’s now helping shape a fresher, more balanced style of wine in the region. We also explore Clarete, a traditional co-fermented style made from white and red grapes grown together, and why it’s once again relevant in a warming climate. This is a conversation about tradition, adaptation, and identity — and how Ribera del Duero is quietly redefining itself through altitude, old vines, and f
