videoBad Wine; It’s Not What It Used To Be
There's an old saying that you have to drink some bad wine to appreciate good wine. In today's market, it's never been easier to find both. Overall wine quality has never been better than it is today; I'd go so far as to say that, from a consumer perspective, we're in the midst of the golden age for wine, yet at the same time, the wine world is overrun with heaps of bad wine, but increasingly a newer sort of bad. Bad wine can mean a lot of things, but here I don't mean wines you don't like. I'm referring to wines with flaws, sometimes faulty wines that are oxidized, with microbial issues, excessive sulphur, or cork taint caused by TCA. Sometimes it's linked to shoddy winemaking. Historically, the problems were linked to a lack of resources, a lack of knowledge, or both. This still happens today, but it's much less frequent. Now, there is a whole new class of bad: it's deliberate bad, and in my opinion, it's much worse than being well-intentioned and screwing up. Good wine is never
videoThe Problem With RIESLING Isn’t the Wine with Ernst Loosen
In this episode of the No Sediment Wine Podcast, I sit down with Ernst Loosen of Dr. Loosen to explore why Riesling remains one of the most misunderstood wines in the world. We discuss its image problem, traditional winemaking, long ageing, and the impact of Germany’s 1971 wine law. Ernst also breaks down the VDP, Grosse Lage and Grosses Gewächs classifications, while sharing his views on what makes great Riesling and why German wine is still so often underestimated. You can also listen to the No Sediment Wine Podcast episodes on Spotify, Apple Podcast, Amazon Music, Google Podcasts and Castbox. The engineering of non-alcoholic spirits
Remove alcohol from a spirit and you change the way it smells, tastes and feels. Ethanol carries aroma, contributes warmth and texture and helps give a spirit persistence in the mouth. Recreating those qualities without it is a complex production challenge. In a recent WSET webinar, Hendrik Giersiepen, R&D Director at Casa Lumbre, explored how producers are approaching that challenge, drawing on his work developing the non-alcoholic blue agave spirit Almave. From capturing aroma and rebuilding mouthfeel to keeping the finished liquid microbiologically stable, the absence of alcohol has implications at almost every stage of production. Non-alcoholic spirits are still finding their feet Available market data on non-alcoholic spirits is, in Giersiepen's words, “blurry” and heavily focused on Western markets. The category is also much younger than its beer and wine counterparts. Alcohol-free beer has had decades to develop. Germany's first major non-alcoholic beer was launched in 1979, mea
