What is the best part of drinking wine? It is a simple question. The simplicity of the question doesn’t mean that the answer to that question is simple. Also, it doesn’t mean that there is only one answer to that question. Similar to the subject at hand, wine, which is subjective, the answer to our […]

Italy’s new wine tourism support measure is less about subsidising individual cellar doors than strengthening entire wine-producing territories. Under ministerial decree no. 483420, dated 18 September 2026, eligible collective organisations can seek public contributions of up to 50% of […] The post Italy’s Wine Tourism Policy – Part 2: How the 50% Subsidy Program Will Support Wine Regions appeared first on Liz Palmer .

videoOur Unreleased Fiano, Tasted Blind | Fiano Fridays
Fiano Fridays with @thewineanimal, wine three. Stone fruit, honey, a little nuttiness and the highest acid of the four. Brenden called South Australia, and he's right. It's an unreleased Adelaide Hills Fiano of ours, from a trial we've been running for four or five years in new 500-litre French oak puncheons. Brenden didn't pick the oak, and that's what we're after. It should sit behind the fruit. Full blind tastings every week on YouTube, link in bio. #fianofridays #fiano #adelaidehills #blindtasting

videoRanking Vineyards: The Fight Australia Isn't Ready For
Australia's wine regions weren't drawn because winemakers asked for them. They were drawn because Europe wanted proof our labels meant something before it would sign a trade deal, and the big companies only got on board for the market access. Brian Croser signed that agreement for the industry in 1993. In this reverse interview he's back at the table to tackle the next question: should Australia go further and build a proper quality system? The conversation gets into the guts of it. It covers how the Adelaide Hills is actually defined (altitude, geology, rainfall, climate), why you can stand on one side of a road and be outside the region, the 85/15 rule behind every regional label, and what it would take to carve out a new subregion around Gumeracha. Then comes the uncomfortable hypothetical: what stops someone planting a famous region wall to wall, cropping 20 to 30 tonnes a hectare, and dragging its reputation down for everyone? The discussion runs from Italy's 1963 DOC laws and p

A Tour of Wine Grapes: Tannat
Tannat 🍷 Photo by Doris Schneider on Wikimedia Commons The Tannat ( tahn-naht ) grape originated in the Madiran region of South West France, where it has been grown for centuries. In the late 19th century, Basque immigrants carried the vine to Uruguay. Today, Tannat is the national signature grape of Uruguay, thriving in its coastal climate and producing softer styles of wine than its French counterparts. It is also grown in smaller amounts in places like California, Virginia, and Australia. Tannt’s name comes from the local French word for "tanned," referencing both its dark skin color. Wines made from Tannat will have aromas and flavors like blackberries, dark plums, and black currants. Additionally, there may be hints of dark chocolate, licorice, spices, and smoke. Because it naturally contains a very high amount of seed and skin compounds called tannins, the wine can feel quite drying in your mouth when it is young. This high amount of tannins gives Tannat an exceptional ability t
