videoThe Desalvo Cellar | Hart Davis Hart Auction Co.
The DeSalvo Cellar (lots 215-553) was never intended to come to the auction block. In the 1990s, Jason and his wife Deborah began to travel extensively throughout the major wine regions, visiting almost all the producers they collected and formed lifelong relationships with many of them. They never thought they would sell, and the collection was always carefully looked after as a passion project. However, acquisitions eventually exceeded consumption, and they have decided to share a portion of their collection while maintaining the cellar. The DeSalvo’s dedication to source and provenance is reflected in the fact that we have seen receipts for every wine in the cellar. Perhaps it was the visits to many wineries across the world that spurred a dedication to organic agriculture and regenerative farming. The consignment that immediately follows the DeSalvo Cellar will benefit the Ethos Farm Project (lots 554-563), based at a 300 year-old working farm in New Jersey. It is the world’s fir

podcast· 39:26· S1E139WTF is Alicante Bouschet aka Garnacha Tintorera?
Did you know that most red wine grapes do not have red flesh? That is what makes teinturier grapes so unique, and why this is a great episode for expanding your wine knowledge and wine horizons. Alicante Bouschet, as would be appropriate, is one of those grapes. Derived from the French term for “dye” or “stain,” teinturier grapes have red flesh to match their red skins. Crazy, right?!? Alicante Bouschet is not a wine for the faint of heart. Hailing from Portugal and Spain, where it is better known as Garnacha Tintorera, this is a big, bold wine that will knock your socks off. In this episode, we discuss what the teinturier grapes are, and why Alicante Bouschet was a favorite wine for home winemakers during Prohibition. If you are a looking for an alternative to the same old Cabernet Sauvignon, this could be the wine for you. Wines reviewed in this episode: 2021 Terra d'Alter Alicante Bouschet, 2020 Bodegas Venta La Vega Adaras Calizo Garnacha Tintorera. Send us a Text Message and we'll

podcast· 1h 08m· Ep 57IWP Ep57 The California Wine Association (CWA) - Part 2 - The Wine Wars - Historical Episode
Historical Episode IWP Ep57 The California Wine Association (CWA) - Part 2 - The Wine Wars. This is the 2nd part of my series on the California Wine Association or CWA. Last time we focussed on why and how the CWA came to be and some of the key players behind it including Percy Morgan, Charles Carpy, Samual Lachman and Kohler and Frohling. Incorporation was finished in August of 1894, just in time for harvest of that year. The wine firms involved already had San Francisco based offices and cellars and the CWA would make use of these, utilizing the best aspects of each. Today we’ll look at the “Wine War” where a conglomerate of winegrowers would battle against the CWA for control of the California wine industry. They were called the California Wine Makers Corporation, I might refer to them also as “The Corporation” or the CWMC. This one is deep dive into the politics of the late 1800's wines business. videoTasting Australia’s most iconic wine | The Wine Show starring Amelia Singer
I did not sleep the night before filming at the Henschke family home. Meeting Stephen Henschke, for a wine geek, is equivalent to thespians meeting Cate Blanchett. Both Australians are justifiably considered royalty in their specific fields. And yes, being introduced to Stephen, in his world famous vineyard, The Hill of Grace, was one of the most significant moments of my wine career – but not for the reasons I thought it would be. I knew that this vineyard was over 150 years old, producing some of the most expensive wine in the world. These wines are not your stereotypical Aussie fruity, oaky, alcoholic fruit bombs; their exotic spice and concentrated flavours evoke the years of loving care this one family has given these grapes, over six generations. What I had not envisaged was how humble and genuine Stephen and all the Henschkes would be. The tenacious Lutheran work ethic of the family’s immigrant ancestors is reflected in the winery ethos today. They view their job as earth’s ca

videoMornington Peninsula: Hospitable to people, if not to grapes… | The Wine Show starring Amelia Singer
I was prepared for anything. Dressed as Reese Witherspoon from Wild, it was time to meet Mornington Peninsula. A cool-climate wine region, its harsh environment for grape growing is notorious amongst wine makers. Warwick Ross may be a well-known film producer, yet his bravery in winemaking is just as impressive. His winery, Portsea Estate, lies at the furthermost point of the Peninsula, exposed to the elements. Initially startled upon discovering the wind-whipped site in 2000, he now produces Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that critics compare to top Burgundian wines. Paradoxically, this hostile terrain has created not only wonderful wine, but also an extremely hospitable ‘cellar door’ ethos. The concept is that visitors try the wines and also enjoy local cuisine. Dishes are prepared on-site and savoured whilst looking out over a stunning panorama. Further down the road, Foxey’s Hangout takes the ‘cellar door’ experience one step further. Run by Tony and Michael, two brothers and former

The Wine Makers – Bibiana Gonzalez Rave, Cattleya Wines
Bibiana is an absolute powerhouse in the wine industry, and we’ve been fans since she first appeared on the podcast 6 or 7 years ago. Her journey is nothing short of extraordinary. Raised in Medellin, Colombia, she dreamed of making wine as a teenager in a country with no real wine culture. Determined, she moved to France, graduated with honors from the University of Bordeaux, and went on to work at prestigious estates like Haut-Brion. She gained experience in Cote-Rotie with Michel and Stephane Ogier and Domaine Clusel-Roch, then moved to Alsace, Burgundy, South Africa, and finally, California. In California, she worked for renowned wineries such as Peay, Qupe, Au Bon Climat, Lynmar, and Pahlmeyer before establishing her own labels: Cattleya and Alma de Cattleya. She also co-founded Shared Notes with her husband Jeff Pisoni—yes, that Pisoni. On top of her winemaking success, Bibiana now imports coffee from Colombia to roast in Sonoma County for a dedicated customer base. Oh, and did w

Every vine that delves its roots into the deep soil where once was the sea has its own voice. Understanding and conducting the singular harmony of this chorus is a responsibility and an honour for Ornellaia. The combination of soil, sun, sea, wind and the history of this land defines every wine.
