Desilynn Smith lost her husband to drugs in 2021. Her husband, a Black man, belonged to one of the highest demographic groups in our country losing their lives to drugs: older Black men. Desilynn talks about her work with that community and her dedication to doing that work in her husband's memory. Desilynn is the Executive Director of Uniting Garden Homes, Inc. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She holds Bachelor's degrees in Criminal Justice and Special Education and a Master's Degree in Mental Health Counseling, specializing in Substance Abuse Counseling. With over 20 years dedicated to serving her community, she has focused on addressing the injustices within the justice system, advocating for individuals with mental health issues, and tackling community trauma. I have been horrified by some of the work I have seen on-line and even on an airline. Just when the industry is reevaluating where it needs to go, ghastly footage shows up in the medai...have we no understanding of what the people want to see? Film is story telling...and Chris McGilvray is keenly aware of this. Though he was focused on corporate productions in the Silicon Valley, the opportunity to document a story of the winery Eden captured his imagination. Chris McGilvray's path to wine was anything but typical—he started at USC's prestigious film school, dropped out to wander Central America, and finally became an independent filmmaker in Santa Cruz, a place where both winemaking and movie making are decidedly unconventional, and the distance from Silicon Valley is measured in more than miles. 9/18/25: Three Floyds' Brewing Co.'s Munsterfest
I'd intended to get this post up a few weeks ago. Back then, the air was chilly and crisp. There was that distinctive autumnal aroma on the breeze. It would've been perfect for the blog to ring in Oktoberfest season. Alas, I waited too long. Now, we're back to 90-degree days with air quality alerts. It's still summer, and the weather wants us to know it. But hey, at least it's a good day for a lager! I'm doing up Three Floyds Munsterfest today. I bought it primarily for the label--I, much like my toddler, love Godzilla. Let's see if this Oktoberfest-style lager is just label-temptation or the real deal! Since it's been nearly six years since Three Floyds last graced the blog, let's talk about them for a bit. The brewery got its start in Hammond, IN back in 1996 when Nick Floyd began brewing on a mishmash of equipment. After getting a few renowned beers under the Three Floyds flag, the operation expanded to Munster, IN in 2001 and opened a brewpub in '04. Since then, the brewery's

Franciacorta’s Ca’ del Bosco: Icon of Italian Sparkling Wine
Yesterday was a gloriously sunny fall day. One of those echos of summer that puts you in a celebratory mood. And, happily for me, I was headed to lunch with the charming Giacomo Marzotto, a member of the wine powerhouse Marzotto family, in town to sing the praises of their Franciacorta estate. Ca’ del Bosco is one of the most renowned producers of Franciacorta sparkling wine. Over a lineup of both sparkling and still bottlings, Giacomo offered insight into the philosophy that has made Ca’ del Bosco a benchmark estate in Italy. Franciacorta in Context Franciacorta is a relatively young appellation, officially recognized in 1967 and elevated to DOCG status in 1995. In just a few decades, this Lombardy region has grown into Italy’s premier source of traditional-method sparkling wine, often compared to Champagne.
