Sidebar Ep.137: Moors, Manors & Midnight Secrets: A Beginner’s Guide to Gothic Fiction
Hey — let’s talk Gothic. If you loved the Wuthering Heights episode but aren’t sure what “Gothic” means, here’s a friendly, no‑pressure rundown: it’s a literary vibe that exploded in the late 1700s and early 1800s (part of Romanticism) and stuck around because people couldn’t get enough of spooky mystery, big feelings, and weird houses. Stories often leave the door open between a rational explanation and the uncanny, so you’re always wondering what’s real. The setting matters: remote, isolated places—windy moors, stormy cliffs, spooky woods, and usually a grand but slightly crumbling manor. That atmosphere of beauty plus decay is basically Gothic’s aesthetic fingerprint. Protagonists are frequently women, which made these books especially

Welcome to Lodi Wine Country: No Reservations Required
There’s something happening in Lodi, and we want you to be a part of it. Wine country has changed. Over the past few years, visiting wineries has become increasingly expensive, exclusive, and (let's be honest) a little intimidating. Average tasting fees have more than doubled since 2012. Walk-in visits and wine bar tastings have nearly disappeared, becoming increasingly rare in most regions. And for many wine lovers, especially those just beginning their journey, this shift has made wine country feel less welcoming and more out of reach. That's not what wine is supposed to be about. Getting Back to What Matters Here in Lodi, we've been paying attention. Wine should bring people together, not push them away. We've always believed that great wine starts in the vineyard and ends at the table, with real people sharing real moments. That doesn't require fancy fees or exclusive access. That's why we're launching No Reservations : not just a campaign, but a promise. Lodi is here t

podcast· 51:44· S7E25Keep Calm and Sauvignon
Sauvignon Blanc is one of the wine world's most divisive grape varieties. On the one hand, it's hugely popular for its aromatic charm and upbeat appeal. And yet some people can't stand it, sommeliers actively steer their customers away from it and connoisseurs turn their noses up at, 'the gin and tonic of wine'. But is it possible that this is all just a bit, well, premature? That we're judging a grape variety that is only just starting to show us what its true potential really is? And that Sauvignon Blanc really is a grape variety capable of greatness?! To check the global temperature, we're privileged to be granted an audience with Château Margaux's Philippe Bascaules , South Africa's Duncan Savage , and UK Best Sommelier Maria Boumpa . What they have to say will raise more than a few eyebrows. (Including an unexpected scoop about top South African producer Eben Sadie...) We firmly believe it's time to rip up the established rule book when it comes to Sauvignon Blanc, and open our mi
