Too far down with the kids
Creative and unexpected moves has always been the stock-in-trade at Rascals Brewery -- the clue is in the name -- but I really wasn't expecting their latest gambit. I'm taking it as an indicator of the ongoing decline of "craft beer" as it was once known. For one thing, the brewery logo is as small as they can make it on the packaging, suggesting not quite disavowal, but certainly a different angle from usual. And secondly, Chido is purportedly a Mexican-style pale lager with added lime zest, sold by the six-pack of 33cl clear glass bottles. For those unfamiliar with how beer is sold in Ireland, the bottled multipack format belongs exclusively to imports, at least since Eight Degrees tried and abandoned it almost two decades ago. But I'm quite prepared to believe that it's something that might work now, as beer transitions away from involved and fancy towards simple and familiar. I began by testing it within its intended context. It was a sunny day and I was thirsty. I dran

podcast· 1h 27m· S6E106Fame, Cocaine, and the Crash: How Jennifer Gimenez Found Real Recovery
TRIGGER WARNING: pregnancy loss and sexual assault 4:50:00 - 15:60:00 Jennifer Gimenez had the kind of life people dream about. Named one of Maxim’s 100 Hottest Women on Earth, the youngest model to grace the cover of American Elle , and starring in films like Blow , Charlie’s Angels , and The Sweetest Thing - on the outside, it looked like pure glamour. But behind the camera, a very different story was unfolding. In this episode, Jennifer shares how she fell in love with cocaine at the height of her modeling career, chasing a high that quietly unraveled everything. What started as part of the lifestyle led her into a cycle of addiction, brief moments of sobriety sparked by an accidental NA meeting, and relapses while still showing up on major film sets. Without a real foundation in recovery, the pattern kept repeating. Eventually, everything caught up with her—leading to treatment with Dr. Drew and a breaking point that included a failed suicide attempt. On January 15, 2005, Jennifer

Nannup Estate Firetower SMT 2022
I recently received a few wines from the Blackwood Valley's Nannup Estate as I explore the district from the comfort of my east coast abode. Two wines down from this producer and they've delivered two rippers. This Shiraz Malbec Tempranillo nails the brief for great drinking. No information was received about the percentages in the blend, but that almost seems irrelevant when the going is good and the delish factor is high. Crushed purple petals set the tone. It's a wine with a rustic presence but polished with bevelled edges. Plums, mulberries and blueberries offer plenty of interest and depth with black earth and a notable minerally vibe. A faint eucalyptus note raises its hand with a neat dusting of dark chocolate crumb. Tense tannins soften over a couple of days. Built for food, it will take down some robust protein with ease. A terrific blend and rock-solid example of pleasure all for 28 bucks. 92/100 Region: Blackwood Valley RRP: $28 Source: Sample Winery

Nannup Estate Rolling Hills Malbec 2022
Smart drinking. A Malbec with great fruit and shape, find me a cozy place on a cold night and a generous glass. Plush plummy fruit leads the way with ripe mulberries and hints of blueberries framing the edges adding lift. Beneath the fruit lies an earthy core threaded with fruit bun spices that cling to a persistent finish. Dusty and cocoa tannins are tense and add some chew. Thoroughly enjoyable, this is great stuff. 92/100 Region: Blackwood Valley RRP: $38 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow: Instagram , LinkedIn and X
