Melissa Galliani and Dan Berger
Meissa and Dan. California Wine Country today features Melissa Galliani, GM of Wine Country Radio , with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. Melissa is a frequent guest on the show, and was with us most recently on this episode with winemaker Dennis McCarter . Dan Berger’s first wine today is a 2023 that comes from Bibiana Ravé called Shared Notes . It is 75% Sauvignon Blanc and 25% Semillon, aged on the lees for a long time. That is what gives it a silky texture. It sells for $80 and it is hard to find because they don’t make very much of it. Next is a Vermentino. Where the last wine is subtle, this one is “in your face.” Dan Berger made this Vermentino himself. This is the 2023 bottling. The grower in Carneros is Las Brisas Vineyard. It is on a rise that overlooks the bay. There aromas of peaches and a little bit of pineapple. It is 100% natural and sells for $28 on Dan’s Bahl Fratty website. “…almost effervescent on the tongue,” as Melissa observes. This is Dan’s second year of making wine

Together, they opened some old wines and some brand-new ones, letting the conversation flow. There’s plenty of harvest wrap-up, vineyard talk, and fascinating blending discussion. podcast· 43:02▻ Philippe Guigal
Philippe Guigal is the third generation of the illustrious Guigal wine family from the Rhône. He talks to Sarah Kemp for our series “Great Wine Lives” about growing up in Ampuis with his grandfather Etienne who started the company in 1946 and his father Marcel who took over at 17 years old when his father became blind. Philippe discusses the “La Las”, of which there is about to be a fourth, why he believes in the future of the Rhône despite climate change and his excitement about Château de Nalys in Châteauneuf-du-Pape which the family bought in 2017. He tastes every lunchtime with his father and he is delighted that his twin sons both are interested in wine, one wants to be an oenologist, the other wants to run a company. A fascinating interview with one of France’s most dynamic producers, whose family is at the heart of everything. More information at wine-conversation.com
videoRockburn Pinot Gris 2023
On the picturesque Gibbston Back Road you will find our Pinot Gris Vineyard. Grapes were hand harvested early morning then quickly returned to the Rockburn Winery and fermented in small batches. Parcels of the youthful pinot gris have then been subtlety aged in older French oak, thus adding additional layers of texture and weight to the palate and enhancing those exceptional aromatics and flavours. On the nose you’ll find aromas of ripe peach, nectarine, and Nashi pear with a vibrant luscious palate and long, zesty finish. Complements rich or light seafood meals and most spiced cuisine, very versatile.
videoRockburn Stolen Kiss Rose 2023
The sweetly frivolous and fruity side of Central Otago Pinot Noir is bound up in this bottle of Stolen Kiss rosé; once unleashed into your glass its candy-floss and crème-brûlée aromas shall sashay into a flirtatious toffee-apple and simmering strawberry palate smeared with cherry lip-gloss; most fun to drink chilled on sultry summer afternoons and evenings.
videoRockburn Tigermoth Riesling 2022
Meticulously grown in the stunning Parkburn region of Central Otago. With a lower alcohol of 10%, this exquisite medium-sweet Riesling pays homage to the renowned Spätlese wines of Germany, while showcasing the unique terroir of our cherished Parkburn Vineyard. Prepare your senses for a harmonious symphony of flavours as the richness of balanced sweetness and the gentle embrace of fine acidity dance upon your palate. Immaculately crafted, this Riesling strikes the perfect equilibrium, showcasing a seamless fusion of indulgent sweetness and crisp vibrancy. Apricots and mandarin juice dominate the nose of this wine in its youth, and the palate is filled with lively notes of tangerine and lime. The immaculately balanced rich sweetness and fine acidity are brought to completion by a very long and cleansing finish. Easily enjoyed as an aperitif, or with long lunches, cheese, white meat or delicate seafood dishes, this wine will continue to evolve over the next decade.
videoRockburn Pinot Noir 2022
The 2022 Noir reflects the warm vintage of that year, delivering the lush, vibrant characters we are renowned for. This wine, as always, is crafted from grapes grown on our own estates: Parkburn in the Cromwell Basin and our Gibbston Valley Vineyard, with Gibbston fruit making up 15% of the final blend. The wine spends 10 months aging in French oak, with 30% of the barrels being new, adhering to our usual process. This meticulous approach ensures exceptional consistency year after year. Expect bright fruit characters, excellent aging potential, and a versatility that pairs effortlessly with food. This wine is perfect for sharing with friends and can be enjoyed for at least the next decade.
videoRockburn The Chosen Chardonnay 2022
Many grapes are picked. Not all are chosen. But as we seek eloquent expressions of site and season there are some special spots in the vineyard that assert themselves immediately; a row of vines that can stop a winemaker in their tracks, a small planting that has achieved perfect harmony and resonance with the sun and soil. This wine was Chosen from just such a place. A singular site nestled in the dusty heart of Bannockburn has gifted us just two barrels of wine showing exceptional purity and presence. The Chosen Chardonnay may be cellared with confidence for six years or more; as we bottle it with out fining or filtration a harmless deposit may form in the bottle.
videoRockburn Fume Blanc 2022
Rockburn Fumé Blanc is a handpicked selection of barrels that most eloquently speak of site and season, and exhibit character above and beyond their cradle-mates. Although made from Sauvignon Blanc, what I am seeking is expression of minerality and texture, something far away from the "ordinary" as far as we understand Sauvignon Blanc to be here in New Zealand. Leave your pre-conceptions behind and this wine will open your eyes. Our Fumé Blanc is a single vineyard wine displaying the richness and minerality created from out Parkburn Vineyard site, giving a richer, rounder take on the Kiwi favourite 'Sauvignon Blanc. Extended barrel maturation and malolactic fermentation induce secondary characteristics giving texture, length and weight to the wine. You will discover notes of white peach, petrichor, and wet stone; hints of pavlova dance on the rich but well defined palate. Best enjoyed very lightly chilled. Cellar for a decade or more with confidence.
videoRockburn The Art Pinot Noir 2022
One of the (many) attractions to the field of Winemaking is that singular combination of art and science employed to craft each wine, every year. The Science is well defined, and the literature is continually being added to; the Art is not so easy to pin down. It is born of the individual winemaker and their Muse and exists in the heart; it finds its expression within the senses of the imbiber. This wine is the result of our Winemaker let loose to practice his Artistry on fruit from other sites within Central Otago. Created from a single vineyard site high in the Dunstan foothills this Pinot Noir speaks with great eloquence of its origins. Very high-quality fruit and excellent physiological ripeness allowed for a generous inclusion of whole bunches in the ferment, adding spice and texture to the wine, and further complexity and harmony was encouraged with extended maturation in barrel. This wine shows a dense core of dark cherries, suggestions of star anise and cinnamon, firm yet plia
videoRockburn The Chosen Hillside Pinot Noir 2022
1000 x Individually Numbered Bottles Produced Many grapes are picked. The Hillside block is unique in our Parkburn Vineyard, having a steep Easterly aspect, catching the full morning sun but avoiding the late afternoon heat. Several clones are planted here, but have blended harmoniously to create a wine of great purity and presence. Expect to see this youthful wine transform and evolve over a decade or more; please be aware a fine deposit may occur as a result of our minimal handling philosophy.
