videoRockburn The Chosen 777 Pinot Noir 2022
1000 x Individually Numbered Bottles Produced Many grapes are picked. Not all are chosen. But as we seek eloquent expressions of site and season there are some special spots in the vineyard that assert themselves immediately; a row of vines that can stop a winemaker in their tracks, a small planting that has achieved perfect harmony and resonance with the sun and soil. This wine was Chosen from just such a place. The 777 clone is widely planted in our Parkburn Vineyard, but this particular block was identified early as having great potential to create this, a wine of great purity and presence. Expect to see this youthful wine transform and evolve over a decade or more; please be aware a fine deposit may occur as a result of our minimal handling philosophy.
videoRockburn Vintage 2023
The summer of 2022 / 2023 barely existed for most of New Zealand; because Central Otago was hogging it all. A late spring was negated by a hot and dry summer, and while that would usually herald an early vintage, the vines had different ideas. So picking began in earnest on our Parkburn site on the very normal date of 21st March and was taken in very swiftly. Sugars were lower than average, but aromatics and flavours were exceptional, and I thought I was being very clever indeed. And then the frosts came along, and the rain started, and we had some very disappointing and atypical weather for several weeks. The vines gave up on gathering any further sugars, but at least retained those fantastic flavours, and we picked carefully around the weather events to bring in some very fine fruit. So rather than the bold and ripe vintage we were anticipating, we instead experienced a season better defined by finesse and bright aromatics, beautiful florals and very elegant wines. As these w

videoAurelio Montes on Carménère
Aurelio Montes's business card reads Chief Winemaker Montes Wines but also includes the title "Guardian of the Spirit." It's a tribute to Douglas Murray, a co-founder of Montes Wines in 1987. He came up with the title after emerging unscathed from a severe automobile accident in the 1990s. From that point on, the winery changed its labels to include the angel motif, the good luck charm that Murrary carried in his pocket and attributed to his ability to walk away from the accident. We asked Aurelio to take us back to carménère beginnings in Colchagua and his winery's approach to making wine from this old Bordeaux grape variety. Interestingly, the decision not to rush to market led to the creation of Purple Angel almost a decade later, a wine that became an instant gold standard for Chilean carménèreupon its release. Montes Wing's latest release is the next iteration of carménère. It is the result of planting higher up on the vineyard slope, and in Aurelio's opinion, creates another v

videoFrom Krug and Seña to Phantom Creek Estates
One of the things we love about the Okanagan wine industry is the diversity of people coming from around the world with a large amount of work experience. The latest is Francois Mateo, whose background includes working with the famed Champagne House Krug and with Eduardo Chadwick at Seña in Chile's Aconcongua Valley. After less than a month on the job at Phantom Creek Estate Winery, we spoke with Francois to get his first impressions of the region, the wines, and his new home on the Black Sage Bench. Auf unserer kleinen Tour de France machen wir Speed-Dating mit sechs Lieblingsregionen. Ihr wollt mehr erfahren über die Böden und Lagen der Champagne? Über Bordeaux und seine Geheimtipps? Do you know the What and Why of your favorite wines?
One of the vinous offramps I took a few years ago was to expand the depth and breadth of my wine appreciation; more specifically, to explore, and discover, more wines than were in my usual buying/drinking/cellaring routine. I also nagged those of you who were readers at the time, to enlarge the scope of your wine enjoyment by introducing (and even challenging) your palate with new types and styles. Coincidental with that, was my decision 1) to be far more deliberate in my tasting assessments, and 2) to keep a record of them via Instagram posts. Once registered, I began following (and learning from) wine enthusiasts who posted their assessments, and many of those returned the favor by following me. In deciding to be more thorough and attentive to the details underlying the components in the basic tasting protocol ( See, Swirl, Sniff, Sip, Savor ), I came to an expanded appreciation of a wine in its entirety, its overall style and structure, as well as its ultimate quality
