The Wine Makers – Ben Gordon, Bouchon Family Wines
Our friend Bella Pearson from Vine Connections introduced us to Ben Gordon from J. Bouchon Family Winery this week, and we were immediately intrigued by their deep history of farming Pais —known as Mission here in California. The Bouchon family’s winemaking story began in the late 19th century when young viticulturist Emile Bouchon left Bordeaux, France, for Chile. Today, Julio Bouchon and his children continue the family’s fourth-generation winemaking tradition in the Maule Valley , blending deep soil research with innovative techniques to craft distinctive, terroir-driven wines that honor the region’s rich history. One of the most fascinating aspects of their vineyards is how Pais grows up the trees along the vineyard’s edge, creating a stunning visual that had us imagining climbing ladders to harvest the grapes—definitely not OSHA-approved here in California! videoCustom Wine Cellar Cooling Guide for Beginners!
The primary goal of wine cellars, supported by the installation of wine cellar cooling units, is to age and store wine over extended periods. It's not just about storing wine at any temperature and chilling it before consumption. This becomes crucial, especially when dealing with expensive or substantial quantities of fine wines. Over many months or years, wine can suffer negative effects or even be ruined if stored in an environment that is excessively hot, too cold, or subject to frequent fluctuations. The precision of wine cellar cooling units ensures a stable and optimal environment for the proper aging and preservation of wines. For anyone looking to build their first wine room or wine cellar, here's a beginner's guide on custom wine cellar cooling! podcast· 38:31· S6E13Appellation Marlborough Wine
Appellations are wine regions with rules, normally associated with Europe. So how come an enviably free-wheeling, super successful region like New Zealand's Marlborough has felt the need to develop Appellation Marlborough Wine ? We put this question and more to Ben Glover, renowned winemaker and proud Appellation Marlborough Wine (AMW) member. He talks about, 'ripping the beige quilt off Marlborough' and his distaste for 'mediocrity'. We also have fun playing around with AMW's jazzy new interactive wine map, tasting along to bring the geography to life through a set of delicious Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs. (You can do the same too!) Thanks to Appellation Marlborough Wine for sponsoring this episode and once again allowing us to taste and talk about one of our all-time favourite wine regions. We also touch on things as diverse as pastoral shows, the Model T Ford in black, springtime fireworks, scripture, swamps, growing pains, snow peas, 'corrupt acidity' and dancing a merry jig... Th
podcast· 33:11· S7E21Walla Walla Road Trip - Hoquetus Wines
Robert from Hoquetas Wines ditches his rock-god tours to nerd out on Riesling and Rhône blends in Walla Walla. He’s obsessed with minimal intervention—so no fancy lab tricks or color-boosting chemicals, and apparently not even a whiff of new oak is allowed to stain his precious juice. Heidi Moore, the gracious host who loves to remind us she butchers names, pokes into Robert’s Catholic altar boy wine days (yep, underage church guzzling), his musician career, and how he’s basically a one-man band in both the winery and the tasting room. They fangirl over Riesling’s overlooked splendor, get all philosophical about wine being a living masterpiece, and dish out sweet pairings like fried chicken with bubbly.
