What should beer labels say?
With all the coverage recently about what the labels on alcoholic drinks should or shouldn’t say, one side that nobody thought to ask is us, the consumers. Everyone recognises that we need to be informed about the products we buy, but exactly what and how? Alcoholic beverages have a long, and in Beoir’s view inappropriate, […]

podcast· 54:31· Ep 419From IT To Wine. Garry And Joanne Brooks Could Not Shake The Dream Of A Winery
Gary Brooks doesn't just make wine—he turns the whole idea of winemaking on its head and brings it back down to earth, reminding us that, after all, it's just "rotting fruit." But don't be fooled by the humility. In this episode of Wine Talks, you'll discover how a man raised in Annapolis, guided by a career that veered from the Navy to IT management, ended up chasing Pinot Noir dreams in California's Petaluma Gap. As Paul Kalemkiarian digs in, you'll learn how Gary navigated the split between wine academia and hands-on "cellar rat" labor, why starting Brooks Note Winery took more grit and capital than sanity, and what it's like to pour your soul—and your bottles—out of the back of your truck just to make ends meet. Gary shares candid stories about the hard business realities behind artisan winemaking, how texture and mouthfeel outshine flavor notes in the true art of blending, and why he thinks the grandest moments in wine come down to honest connections, not pedigreed grapes. You'll

Papapietro-Perry
Steve, Ben, Yolanda and Olli. Ben Papapietro and his wife Yolanda join Steve Jaxon on California Wine Country. Dan Berger is away today, visiting the Anderson Valley Pinot Noir Festival, which we talked about on this episode two weeks ago. Ben is a co-founder of the Papapietr0-Perry winery. This is Ben and Yolanda’s first time on CWC. Ben Papapietro started in his basement in San Francisco as a home winemaker. He had a friend, Bruce Perry, who worked with Ben in the delivery of the San Francisco Chronicle. They wanted to make Pinot but there was hardly any fruit at that time. Another friend, Burt Williams, also helped him get some Pinot fruit. But they made a lot of Cabernet Franc blends and Zinfandel. In 1990 he got a really good source of Pinot fruit. Then his partner talked him into opening a professional winery in 1997. Early in his winemaking career, Ben did some harvests with Burt Williams, the co-founder of Williams-Selyem, who was a mentor to Ben. He was one of the local winema

podcast· 36:02· S6E18News & Views 2025: Alcohol in deep space; Pope Francis - wine legend; Global wine stutters - but Essex, Bhutan, Pompeii on the up
Where we selectively recap on the wine headlines in recent months (informative - but also fun) and respond to various questions, comments...and grumbles. We gaze into deep space in search of booze. We consider how global wine can be in the doldrums...but Essex is on the up. We hear a sad tale of vandals destroying scientific research, and a heartening story of how ancient Pompeii wine is set to be revived. Above all, we revel in the wise words of the recently deceased Pope Francis, who declared wine to be a 'gift from God', a 'healthy consumer habit' and, 'a true joy for the heart of man'. Apparently he told winemaker Ricardo Cotarella: 'You can't party without wine.' Our kind of Pope. We play our globally popular Guess the Missing Word in the Wine Headline game, this time featuring Bridget Jones, Bhutan, a wrestling superstar and various forms of wildlife. Just a trigger warning for anyone traumatised by the mention of Peter's pants from our previous episode on fake wine - Peter's pan

With over 40 years at the estate, Bellaccini shares how tradition and innovation work hand in hand to shape some of Italy's most iconic wines. We explore the story behind Vigorello, the first Super Tuscan from Chianti Classico , and the revival of Pugnitello, a once-forgotten grape now central to San Felice's identity. Bellaccini also opens up about the estate's commitment to sustainability, including regenerative viticulture and adapting to climate change without irrigation. This conversation goes beyond winemaking—it's about preserving culture, respecting the land, and understanding wine as more than just a drink. As Bellaccini says, "Wine makes your soul richer." Whether you're a Tuscan wine lover or simply curious about what makes great wine possible, this episode is a thoughtful and inspiring listen. For more information about our Podc

SWR Member Interview: What’s the case for PET wine bottles?
It’s no secret that packaging makes up a significant proportion of wine’s carbon footprint. SWR’s research indicates that roughly half of the carbon impact of wine can be attributed to the glass bottle. Whilst many producers are working on light-weighting bottles (see the SWR Bottle Weight Accord ), some are also exploring alternative packaging formats. In this Sustainable Wine Roundtable (SWR) Member Interview podcast, I speak with Kelsey Kolbo, business development manager - wine & liquor at Petainer , about the opportunities presented by PET packaging. Kelsey shares insights into the environmental and economic benefits of PET wine bottles, from lower carbon emissions to reduced risk of breakage. We discuss the drivers behind the shift to alternative formats, common misconceptions about PET, and more. SWR is developing a Packaging Choice Framework , offering evidence-based insights into the merits and challenges of different packaging formats. If you're interested in learning more or
