From Bad Beer to Exceptional Pints : Rise Up
I've been drinking beer for the better part of 3 decades and thinking more critically about what's in my glass for the last 10 or so, examining the context as much as the contents as it were, occasionally traipsing into philosophy while still operating as the low-key drunk that I am. I have scored thousands of pints in video and the written word, some in as short as a few sentences and others as long as is way past what any sane person would consider necessary for a beer, always with an eye to style and truth in advertising when it comes to what I encounter . I've led with my heart, held grudges and soft spots in my soul at the same time and tried to always seek the good in every beer I encounter ...even when that isn't possible... What all this preamble is getting to is that after all this time, as I seek more balance and even more value for the things I have in my day-to-day life, I wonder why some of the beers we see hit the market even bother existing? Why do s

Cali Margarita
Southern California winters are like a dream. Take it from a kid who grew up with the harsh Bulgarian winters; I still find myself watching in disbelief while people surf in December, kayak in January and play beach volleyball in February. But if I were to tell you that January is also one of our favorite months to make fresh juice cocktails, you might scratch your head and wonder if I've been hit one too many times in the head by one of those volleyballs.

Ashtin Berry Loves Dive Bars, Would Bring Champagne to a Desert Island
Those who claim that NYC’s music scene is dead haven’t yet scored a seat at Tokyo Record Bar. A riff on a type of Japanese bar, at which owners painstakingly curate evening soundtracks, this Greenwich Village spot invites patrons to request one song each to hear during their meals. The considerable vinyl collection spans The Bee Gees, Queen, N.W.A., and Bill Withers, and was reportedly donated by an enthusiastic Sony A&R executive. videoAn incredible visit to CLOS BATEAU in Beaujolais!
Clos Bateau is a wine estate by Thierry and Sylvie Klok de Visser, who in 2019 left the restaurant scene in Amsterdam to pursue their dream of winemaking, in Beaujolais. They tend to 4-5 hectares of vineyards in Lantignié, a prized village just north of Lyon that many state should be the 11th Cru of Beaujolais! Their vineyards are occupied by old-vine Gamay (at least 50 years) and a small amount of younger Chardonnay, tucked away in a tree-lined parcel with it's own microclimate. The dynamic duo behind Clos Bateau let the moon cycles lead their winemaking decisions including in the cellar, such as when to press, bottle, and how long to macerate. Only indigenous yeasts are used for fermentation and no filtering or fining agents are used and no added sulphites - basically, as little intervention as possible. Due to the low yields, production is very limited - they only make about 1100 cases each vintage, some limited to just 700 bottles of so. The wines however have already been very

Nicholas Caluori: Oral History Interview
This interview is with Nicholas Caluori of Secus Wines. In this interview, Nicholas talks about his variety of experiences working wine harvests all around the world and how he started his own label. Nicholas shares about growing up in Kirkland, Washington, where his family owned an Italian restaurant. When he started working at the restaurant in the early 2000s, wine was starting to boom in the Pacific Northwest, and he had to know about wine in order to better serve guests. While originally he was more interested in beer, Nicholas and his mom took a course with the Court of Master Sommeliers to understand more about wine. Many of his friends in the area worked in wine, so he joined a harvest at Betz Family Winery in 2015. After that, he worked harvests in New Zealand, California, Chile, and finally Burgundy before coming back to Washington. Later in the interview, Nicholas talks about moving to Oregon as the wine scene seemed more “punk rock.” While working at Limited Addition, he st

podcast· 34:46· S7E3The Jancis Robinson EXCLUSIVE - Part 2
Jancis Robinson is a wine superstar. But in this concluding episode of our two-part exclusive interview, we want to get behind the sparkling achievements and get to know Jancis in a personal as well as professional sense. The result is thought-provoking, funny and occasionally eye-opening. We kick off, somewhat unsportingly, by springing a quick-fire question round at Jancis before moving on to discuss everything from the Queen to influencers, negotiating with lawyers in a swimsuit, Cumbria, anorexia, regenerative viticulture, bottle weights, cans - and other hot potatoes. We also explore how she presciently set up her subscription-based website in 2000 then successfully sold it 21 years later. A rare commercial success in the world of wine... If you haven't caught the first instalment of this interview, please do check it out. You don't need to listen to that one, though, in order to enjoy this one. Thanks for tuning in. We love to hear from you so please do get in touch! Send us a vo

SWR Member Interview: Terra Vitis on sustainability, benchmarking, and collaboration
In this Sustainable Wine Roundtable Member Interview podcast, I’m joined by Nicolas Daspres, technical director at Terra Vitis , and my colleague Dr Peter Stanbury, SWR’s head of research. Terra Vitis, a French sustainability certification for winegrowers, was recently covered in the SWR’s second round of Standards Benchmarking . This benchmarking process, structured around the Global Reference Framework (GRF) – the first global statement of what sustainability in wine entails – provides a clear way to compare standards and drive alignment on meaningful progress. We explore the process and requirements behind the Terra Vitis certification, including the organisation’s work on labour standards and sustainable packaging. Nicolas shares the benefits of the benchmarking process, the key insights for Terra Vitis, and the actions they are implementing moving forward. We also reflect on some of the broader themes from this second round of benchmarking and discuss what these findings mean for

podcast· 30:13Episode 108: Wine and Hip Hop Dual Citizenship
In this episode of Wine & Hip Hop: Dual Citizenship, Jermaine reflects on the healing this country needs and shares his perspective on immigration not as politics, but as the story of culture, connection, and what we create when we come together. From the Caribbean migration of the 1970s to the Bronx, Jermaine explores how Jamaican traditions like toasting became the foundation for hip hop and how first-generation experiences shaped the sound of a global movement. Alongside the music, he breaks down Lambrusco—a sparkling red wine from Northern Italy—explaining its styles, flavor, and why it pairs so well with bold Jamaican dishes like jerk chicken. More than just history and wine, this episode argues that Wine & Hip Hop is more than culture—it’s a blueprint for unity, proof that when we blend differences with intention, we can save the world one pairing at a time.
