podcast· 52:53· S1E212Portugal’s Ancient Clay-Pot Reds in Alentejo Are Back. Worth the Hype?
Winemakers in the Alentejo region of Portugal have been bringing back the ancient tradition of making wine in Talha, also known as Amphora, also known as clay pots. In fact, there is a specific designation for wines made in that method in Alentejo called Vinho de Talha. Winemakers are attracted to making wine in clay pots not just because of tradition, but because clay pots, like oak barrels, allow oxygen into the wine, but unlike oak, they do not impart the same heavy, oaky flavors. In addition, making wine in Talha is also usually accompanied by more natural, low-intervention winemaking techniques. In this episode, we dig into this winemaking method, explore the history of winemaking in the Alentejo region, discuss why wine in Alentejo is different from wines made in the more well-known Douro and Dão areas, and give our honest review of two wines from Alentejo made in Amphora. It is an adventure worth taking! Wines reviewed in this episode: 2023 Bojador Vinho de Talha Tinto, 2020 Cas

videoThe A-Z of Wine: 'Z' is for 'Zinfandel'
We head to California to taste some serious Old Vine Zinfandel, on its own native roots (rather than being grafted to a phylloxera-resistant plant's roots) courtesy of its 40-foot deep roots going down into sand! The bugs hate this! We are at Cline Family vineyards, one of the most legendary names in Californian winemaking, based in Sonoma, but here the vineyards are just east of Oakland in Contra Costa county.

videoTorbreck Wines: Is This Australia’s Best Shiraz?
We all know and love the Woodcutter’s Shiraz, but today Nick is tasting the rare, allocated ICONS from Torbreck! 🍷 The Factor: 100% Shiraz that pays homage to the Northern Rhone. It’s not a jammy fruit-bomb; it’s savory and "gamey," with deep notes of blackberry paste, licorice, and Turkish coffee. The RunRig: This is Torbreck's answer to Penfolds Grange or Hill of Grace. Made from ancient vines (some up to 120 years old!), this blend of 98% Shiraz and a splash of Viognier is a complete masterpiece. Think violet aromatics, smoked meats, and blueberry compote. videoAlta Vista Brute Rose Sparkling Wine Review | A Fruit Forward Take on Sparkling Wine
Sparkling wine season rolls on and this week we pop open the Alta Vista Brut Rosé from Mendoza, Argentina. It is a tank method sparkling wine made from an unexpected blend of Malbec and Pinot Noir, and it lands right in the middle of holiday drinking season. On this episode, we talk about why bubbles take over this time of year and how easy it is to lose track of what you are pouring between family dinners, guests dropping by, and that strange week between Christmas and New Year’s. This is the kind of bottle you keep cold and open without overthinking it. From there we break down what tank method really means and why this wine tastes fruit forward, bright, and more rosé driven than bready or yeasty. Cherry, raspberry, citrus, and a little funk on the finish lead to a bigger conversation about sparkling wine styles and how production methods shape texture and flavor. Why RTDs Have a 3 Year Shelf Life and What It Means for Retailers
Ready-to-Drink (RTD) beverages are built for the realities of modern retail. Unlike beer, which typically peaks within 9 to 12 months, RTDs remain stable for 24 to 36 months without losing flavor or quality. This long shelf life is not just a technical detail. It is a strategic advantage for retailers and importers. Longer dating means fewer product write-offs, more flexible logistics, and stronger profit margins. Consumers also benefit from consistent taste, portable packaging, and the reassurance that their purchase is dependable. In this article, we explore why RTDs last so long, the science behind their 3 year shelf life, and how businesses can leverage this advantage to reduce risk and capture new opportunities.
