Louie was diagnosed with HIV in 1983 before there was any treatment available. At that time, HIV was a death sentence. Louie chose to stay sober anyway. August 2025, a torrid Bordeaux summer: cue thunderbolt. Lafleur , one of Bordeaux's most acclaimed wines, sensationally quits the Pomerol and Bordeaux appellations. At the heart of the issue: water. Truth is, vines need water to survive and produce good wine. Not too much, nor too little. But climate change has thrown a giant spanner into the works - places that used to have just enough rain, now often aren't getting enough. And it's a particular issue in more traditional areas, like Bordeaux, where local appellation rules often forbid irrigation (or other things like mulching, reducing vine density or changing vine varieties). Hence Lafleur's decision. In this extended episode, we hear the full rationale from Lafleur as they release their 2025 wines, which benefitted from their unique 'soil water correction' technique. One Day in July...
I wrote this back in July. I was in a pretty dark place a the time, it was a bit of that darkness that was driving me at the time. Feeling better now as I approach a year of sobriety, but I felt compelled to put this into the world to remind myself that I can keep coming back, every time. It's hard to believe a decade has passed so quickly. Time is relative, I've been told, and as I get older, it does seem to be speeding up, even as I feel like I'm slowing down. On July 11, 2015, I changed my handle on Instagram from RobbyBaconStrips to the DrunkPolkaroo after a particularly drunken night where I made promises to go to a beer festival the next day, drunk me making plans sober me could not afford. The origin of the name is something I've gone over way back in the early days (Find it here : Why the Drunk Polkaroo? ), but it was never intended to be about craft beer or anything other than a silly play on words and my ridiculous propensity for having a few more wobbly pops th

They say don't judge a book by its cover, but when you're staring at a wall of wine bottles about to spend $20-$150, what else can you do? Today, we're testing if cool packaging actually means good wine. The Challenge: Six wines, all with interesting or "dynamic" packaging. We taste them blind first, then reveal the bottles to see if the packaging matches the quality inside. The Premise: Wine shopping is risky. You can't flip through the pages. You read labels, feel the weight, talk to the staff, but ultimately you're judging by the bottle. Does packaging predict quality? What We Found: Some cool bottles = great wine Some cool bottles = disappointing wine Some boring bottles = excellent wine One $150 bottle looked like a clean skin Clear bottles, artist collaborations, metallic labels, traditional designs - none of it guaranteed quality The Verdict: Packaging doesn't predict quality.
