Familia Torres – Purgatori 2023
In what was another life (i.e. pre-pandemic) I received less than 48 hours notice to fill in as the “wine expert” for a group of well-heeled enotourists arriving from the UK for a New Year’s Eve jaunt around Barcelona. I’ve never been much for NYE and so it seemed like a way to get paid well for a couple of days as everything had been planned previously. Little did I know, it was actually the case that the tourism company organizing it was very much in the initial dry heaves […] For full access, please log in or purchase a subscription.

Formerly considered the second wine of Léoville-Las Cases, it is made from a distinct vineyard and is now treated as a distinct entity by its owners, Domaines Delon. The wine is 73% Cabernet Sauvignon with 21% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc. It shows ripe dark fruit with some sweet licorice notes. It is lean, fresh and elegant on the palate with cassis flavors. David scores the 93 to 94/100, and thinks it may need a decade or more to hit its stride. ▶️ CHAPTERS: 0:00 Clos du Marquis 2025 wine label 0 :22 Making Clos du Marquis at the Leoville-las Cases winery 1:15 Blend details – grape varieties 1:26 TASTING - Appearance 2:02 Aromas; plum, cherry and licorish 2:30 Palate; lean, fresh, elegant with cassis flavor 3:16 Score,

Do You Also Enjoy Bubbles Whenever, Because You Can?
All kinds of holidays have sparkling wines attached to them, in fact all of them. But I have to ask, do you also enjoy bubbles whenever, just because you can? I do, why not? Carbonation is exciting, or sodas wouldn’t even exist, although I don’t drink sodas. I don’t need that extra sugar. But… I […] The post Do You Also Enjoy Bubbles Whenever, Because You Can? first appeared on Wine Blog .

Wholesalers worsening the bottleneck
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyI9flHHT2Q&list=RDvyI9flHHT2Q&start_radio=1 A very telling article written by Alfonso Cevola, who worked as the Italian Wine Director for Southern Glazer Wine & Spirits (Southern) for nearly 30 years, demonstrates how the wholesale tier changed their practices to worsen the bottleneck crisis for small wineries. Yes, the same tier that lobbies to take away market opportunities [...]

HALL and WALT White Wines and Rose
Here are some outstanding new releasees by HALL and WALT. You might know HALL for their Cabernets. But they make a killer range of wines outside of their world-class Cabernets. For years they have been producing one of the best Sauvignon Blanc wines for the price in the valley. HALL was founded in 1992 by visionaries Katheryn and Craig Hall, and over time they built one of Napa’s most beautiful, state of the art, wineries that is quite simply a must visit for any serious Napa enophile. This is one of the most fun, electric and beautiful spots to taste in the Napa Valley. HALL also have two outstanding separate lines, WALT (focusing on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay) and BACA (focusing on Zinfandel) that are seriously good in their own right. These brands have performed remarkably well since their inception. I adore the new 2025 WALT Rose (OB, 92) which is fresh, viscous and shows a glorious range of red fruits. One of the most consistent wines in the HALL lineup has been the HALL 2025 ‘Napa

Approachment
Great photo here of the Approachment founders. It is my pleasure to share the wines of Approachment, founded byJessica and Paden West who have been in the industry for many years. Jessica started her wine path working in wine shops and tasting rooms. After learning the sales portion of the business, Jessica acquired an internship in 2013 at Bethel Heights Vineyard working directly with Winemaker Ben Casteel and viticulture master Mimi Casteel. Jessica then entered the NW Wine Studies program to earn her degree in Winemaking. Paden is originally from the Willamette Valley and began his path in wine just as Jessica did -by working in wine shops and tasting rooms. In 2010, Paden was offered an internship at Penner-Ash, managed by Winemaker Lynn Penner-Ash and Assistant Winemaker Brian Irvine. Paden serves as Benza head winemaker while Jessica makes the Approachment wines that show great poise and texture. I love the new 2024 Approachment ‘Oregon’ Pinot Noir (OB, 92) which is soft and appr

Corollary
Corollary is making some of the finest sparkling wines on the West Coast. It is my pleasure to share one of the hottest Oregon Sparkling Wine brands on the scene. Corollary began with the 2017 vintage and has been an immediate success. They have new land in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA where they have now Oregon’s first privately-owned property dedicated exclusively to sparkling wines. This is a spectacular, dramatic and very windswept location to visit and taste wine. The wines are geeky and made with intension. I think that this is the first lineup yet. The 2021 Corollary ‘X-Omni Vineyard Blanc de Blancs’ Sparkling Wine (OB, 96) shows off the beautiful richness of the vintage and has immense power, flavor range, finesse and sterling tension. It is one of the great Oregon sparkling wines that I have tasted in the past year. Learn more about these beautiful wines at https://corollarywines.com/ and here are my reviews of the new wines by Corollary. 2021 Corollary ‘X-Omni Vineyard Blan

From Medicinal to Magical: The History of Gin
Let’s take a little look at how gin went from medicinal elixir to full-blown gin craze. What started as a mix of natural botanicals and early distilling know-how quickly became a global phenomenon—thanks in part to British soldiers, a few wars, and a world that was very ready to raise a glass. At the opening of the 58th edition of Vinitaly in Verona, a clear strategic narrative emerged: the future growth of the Italian wine sector will be driven not solely by export expansion, but increasingly by wine tourism development and the diversification of international markets.
