Whiskey Review: Barrell Seagrass Toasted Rye
Introduction Today, we’re diving into a special whiskey: Barrell Seagrass Toasted. If you’re a longtime listener, you’ll remember that Brad’s favorite whiskey is the original Barrell Seagrass. A few weeks ago, during our conversation with the founders of Barrell Craft Spirits, they mentioned their limited-edition Barrell Seagrass Toasted and kindly sent us bottles to review. So, here we are, tasting this unique expression with its secondary maturation in toasted American oak. For those unfamiliar, Barrell Seagrass is a rye whiskey finished in Martinique Rum, Madeira, and Apricot Brandy barrels. The Toasted version adds another layer of complexity with toasted American oak, aiming to enhance the already rich flavor profile. Clocking in at 119.12 proof, it’s a high-proof rye whiskey with undisclosed mash bill and sourcing from Indiana and Canada. Priced at $200, this bottle firmly sits in the premium category. As I sit with a thick bottle of the new Eisenstone SV902 Hoffmann DV Vineyard Ebenezer Shiraz 2023 in front of me, I keep thinking about how refreshing it is to see how Barossa Shiraz has evolved. The default setting hasn't changed; this wine, and the, style is still unashamedly lush, oaky, and warmi, but we're no longer stuck with the old-school four-square, American oak-heavy styles as the only way. Close followers will know how much I like Stephen Cook's Eisenstone wines, and it was a pleasure to see Stephen on a brisk July day recently to see the ever-growing range of Barossan goodies. Introduction Today, we’re diving into Jack Daniel's 12-Year Batch 1. Last week, we tried Jack Daniel's 10-Year, but now we’re stepping up with this older, higher-proof offering. At 107 proof, it feels like a sweet spot for us—enough kick without being overwhelming. The mash bill is Jack’s standard 80% corn, 8% rye, and 12% malted barley, so the main difference here is the time spent in the barrel. di Carlo Macchi L’invecchiato di questa settimana è un vino molto particolare per vari aspetti: il primo è indubbiamente unico perché, modestia a parte, posso dire di “averlo fatto io”, il secondo è che è forse il primo vino servito per portare dell’acqua, il terzo è che è nato per uno scopo umanitario, il quarto riguarda la cantina che ha permesso il tutto, cioè Rocca delle Macie e il suo titolare, il mio amico Sergio Zingarelli, che in periodo di piena vendemmia misero la cantina a completa disposizione per produrre una singola barrique di vino. Ma andiamo con calma: siamo nel 2011 e a Rocca delle Macie portiamo avanti da quasi due anni un progetto su Youtube che presenta le varie fasi fenologiche della vite, dalla potatura alla vendemmia, riprendendo sempre la stessa vite di sangiovese nei vari momenti dell’anno: avevamo anche dato un nome alla vite, Rockea .
