podcast· 1h 13mCraig Hawkins TESTALONGA
Recorded 21st March 2019 Craig Hawkins, owner with wife Carla and winemaker TESTALONGA – leading proponent of natural wine in SA. Craig as he and his wife Carla are to my knowledge the first people to build a very successful independent business making exclusively natural wine in South Africa. Many other winemakers have used them (and continue to use them) as inspiration to start their own journey. From making 2 barrels of skin contact Chenin Blanc to owning a farm and planting vineyards in 10 years. We recorded this on their farm, Bandits Kloof near Eendekuil in the northern Swartland in the evening after tasting through the very young 2019 wines in cask. We were forced to sit outside as it was during loadshedding, which is a series of planned power outages lasting 2-3 hours to ease pressure on the grid and is needed due to reduced capacity caused by mismanagement (read: corruption) of the state power utility here in South Africa, Eskom. So please excuse the wind noise … you will also
podcast· 1h 01m· S1E9E9 - Red, White and Black · The Documentary, USA
For this episode, we welcome Jerry Bell Jr , director of the documentary Red, White & Black , which explores the lives of minority winemakers in Oregon and the barriers they continue to face. Jerry shares the origins of the project, beginning with Haitian American winemaker Bertony Faustin of Abbey Creek, and explains how the film expanded to highlight Black, women, and LGBTQ+ voices in an industry that has long been overwhelmingly white. Our conversation uncovers Oregon's exclusion laws, the challenges of land ownership, and the subtle and not-so-subtle discrimination that persists in tasting rooms. Jerry also reflects on the importance of consumer education, inclusive wine tourism, and redefining what it means to be a winemaker. Honest and hopeful, this episode is a call to acknowledge history, embrace diversity, and build a wine culture where everyone belongs. podcast· 1h 42mRosa Kruger, Viticulturist
This episode is a conversation with South African viticulturist, Rosa Kruger. Tannie Rosa, as I call her, is a force to be reckoned with. An ex-lawyer and proud Afrikaner, Rosa has travelled extensively throughout the grape-growing world and is now one of the most important voices on viticulture in South Africa. She is a consultant and has worked with some of the most iconic names of modern South African wine: Eben Sadie, the Mullineuxs, the Alheits, Rupert & Rothschild and Boukenhoutskloof to name just a few. She started the Old Vine Project, an NPO which aims to promote and preserve the old vineyards of South Africa. She is probably the most deeply passionate person I have met when it comes to South African vineyards, and those who work them. I wanted to talk to her about the state of viticulture in South Africa, a little about the history and how it has changed in the last 10 years with the rise and rise of local wine quality, and her vision for the future of the South African viney

podcast· 1h 11m· S1E4E4 - Between the Lines Winery, Canada
For this episode, we welcome Greg Wertsch , co-founder of Between the Lines Winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake, for the very first interview of the podcast. Fittingly, our debut features a winery whose name almost mirrors our own — a coincidence too good not to celebrate. Greg, alongside his brother Yannick, has built a family estate that blends German winemaking training with Canadian determination, producing small-lot wines that combine precision and creativity. In our conversation, Greg reflects on how Between the Lines began, his journey into winemaking, and the philosophy that drives the winery. He explains how he and Yannick divide their responsibilities, the calculated risks they take in the vineyard and cellar, and why their approach has been described as "German engineering with a Canadian twist." This debut interview offers an inside look at how the Wertsch brothers are shaping Niagara's next generation of wine. With Greg at the helm, listeners gain candid insights into the balanc
podcast· 1h 00mAlain Jeu and Truly French Wines!
This week the pod comes to you from the French onion soup scented air of Oriel, their guest Alain Jeu’s restaurant in Chinatown. Before jumping into the interview Shaughn and Ellen read the results of their first boozey homework assignment. Find out what bizarre drinks the other listeners are drinking! Alain’s wine situation starts very differently, and much later than many. He rebelled by not drinking which worked in his favor when dating the ladies: parents loved him. He started drinking not until he was in California, but he pours a French wine for Shaughn and Ellen, the Thierry Richoux Irancy Bourgogne Pinot Noir. It’s a great thing for drinking all night long. He recounts learning English on the job, and the culture shock of seeing, in America, all the things he did not think of as “French” things—then gives his recipe for pain perdu, aka French toast. He has no desire to go back to France, beyond for visiting family in the Loire valley where everyone takes turns hosting dinners.

Originally from Denmark where he grew up as the son of a chef and hotelier in the happiest country in the world, Leo Hansen started in the hospitality world at the ripe old age of 12 and hasn't stopped since. First he was a certified European sommelier working for a Michelin starred restaurant and that brought him to the US where he immersed himself in the world of New World winemaking. In 2004 he started Leo Steen Wines , which concentrates on divine Chenin Blanc (AKA Steen in South Africa, but ironically a family name as well!) but also makes Cab Franc, Chardonnay, and Grenache. He has been in California for 20 years but he maintains a European palate and focuses on traditional European winemaking techniques like foot treading, natural yeasts, lower alcohols and less new oak. He's the perfect balance of professional winemaker and sommelier and a fascinating guy all around. And a few show notes: Leo tells us about his early life as a the son of a chef and hotelier, including some note
