podcast· 3:05· S1E1BWS1 - Introduction To Butlers Wine Cellar Podcast
🥂 Welcome to Butlers Wine Show from Butlers Wine Cellar in Brighton, UK 🥂 In 1979, Margaret Thatcher came to power, Sid Vicious died, and the AyatolahIn Khomeni was voted ‘Man of the Year’ by Time Magazine. None of which mattered very much to Henry Butler’s parents Gillian and Geoffrey. They were busy opening their small family-run wine shop in Brighton’s Queens Park Road, with the intention of bringing interesting, characterful wines to a British public then largely unfamiliar with much beyond Black Tower and Mateus Rose (historical fact: there were only three good bottles of wine in the whole of the UK in 1979, and all of them belonged to Mick Jagger). Now in its fourth decade, with a second retail outlet in Brighton’s Kemp Town, mail order and internet operations, and supplying many of Brighton’s best restaurants, pubs and bars, Butler’s can claim the title of Brighton’s Oldest Independent Wine Retailer. Still very much a family business under the dynamic and imaginati

podcast· 1h 35m· S1E15E15 - Foreign Affair Winery · Barclay Robinson, Canada
For this episode, we welcome Barclay Robinson, winemaker at Foreign Affair Winery in Niagara. Barclay's path began as a sommelier in Calgary before studies at Brock University and vintages at Henry of Pelham and Tawse shaped his vision. His curiosity for Italian wines, especially Amarone, led him to embrace the appassimento method in Canada. Foreign Affair was founded in the 1990s by Marisa and Len Crispino, inspired by their years in Verona. Today, under Corby Spirit and Wine, the estate continues their legacy, producing bold, distinctive wines through the drying of grapes before fermentation. Barclay shares how blending, patience, and terroir define their Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Riesling, while new projects keep the winery evolving. This conversation explores legacy, innovation, and how Niagara's cool climate can yield wines of surprising richness. Woolworths operates in a completely different philosophical space than Ex Animo so it was good to chat and compare notes. Thanks Allan, you legend. x
