podcast· 35:38· Ep 31We Heart Chianti
Episode Notes Episode 31 – We Heart Chianti Pete and VinoMike often profess their love for Italian wine. In this episode, the duo heads to Tuscany to talk Chianti. To put this discussion in perspective, they dive into a bottle of 2016 Poggerino Chianti Classico . This is an incredible wine that offers insane value. Imported by their pal Paolo at Beivuma, this is one you need to find. Buy a case – at least! VinoMike drops knowledge on all things Chianti – from normale to Classico to Classico Riserva and more. Pete chimes in with a bit of knowledge, too. If you haven’t tried Chianti in awhile, now is the time. As a reminder, Pete and Mike do not accept advertising dollars from wineries or wine wholesalers. They purchase the bottles they taste on the show. These are not paid endorsements. They could use the money, so this integrity thing sucks. Thank you for listening to That Wine Pod! podcast· 1h 51m· S1E25Episode 25 - Cap Classique - South Africa's Shining Star with Cathy Van Zyl MW
It's the perfect weather for a chilled bottle of something fizzy. In my glass, a delicious Methode Cap Classique (MCC) Rose from Paul René in Robertson, South Africa. To many of us MCC is a relative newcomer on the ever-growing traditional sparkling scene but next year South Africa will celebrate 50 years since its creation. Unable to use the term Method Champenoise (or any mention of the Champagne region), the South African growers who drew inspiration from the French region came up with the 'Classic Cape Methode' or in French, Methode Cap Classic. The pioneering credit goes to the Simonsig Estate.

Episode Notes Episode 30 – Is “Clean” Wine Dirty? Pete and VinoMike ended episode 29 talking about the surge in “clean” wine thanks to the new offering from actress, Cameron Diaz, called Avaline . Well, the guys decided to try it while they talk about the entire “clean” wine movement. Let the shenanigans begin! Both Pete and VinoMike pull no punches in this one. They give their take on “clean” wine as a marketing ploy along with a review of the Avaline wines. Let’s just say they may not be invited to dinner at Cameron’s anytime soon. As a reminder, Pete and Mike do not accept advertising dollars from wineries or wine wholesalers. They purchase the bottles they taste on the show. These are not paid endorsements.
podcast· 2h 29mDuncan Savage, Savage Wines
Today on the podcast we have Duncan Savage – owner and winemaker of Savage Wines. He made his name through the first decade or so of the 2000s as the winemaker of Cape Point Vineyards. Duncan’s production facility (originally set up by Tim Martin) is in the industrial Cape Town suburb of Salt River – I interviewed him there, in the now vacant warehouse above his winery. Note: there is an echo and some street noise, but not too much. Duncan is one of the “good guys” of the industry, very jovial and easy going. I don’t think there are many people with anything negative to say about him, other than his wines sell out too quickly. As you will hear, Duncan has been making wines almost 20 years, and has built one of the stronger brands of the South African “new wave” – I wanted to talk to Duncan about this journey and about his new 2019 wines about to be released. It is a long one, as Duncan is a great story-teller and has some very well thought out insights into wine making, marketing and l

podcast· 54:14· Ep 29Celebrity Wines: Hot or Not?
Episode Notes Episode 29 – Celebrity Wines: Hot or Not? Pete and VinoMike decided to tackle the ever-expanding world of celebrity wines! Are these gems or duds? Are all celeb wines created equal? They decided to discuss celebrity wines because of this article from Esquire . To explore the topic, they first pop open a bottle of rosé from Post Malone - Maison No. 9 . And, as usual, these two don’t hold back. The episode wraps with VinoMike bringing up Cameron Diaz and the concept of “clean” wine. You can probably guess how these two react to this marketing angle. Let them know if you want to hear a full episode on this hot topic. As a reminder, Pete and Mike do not accept advertising dollars from wineries or wine wholesalers. They purchase the bottles they taste on the show. These are not paid endorsements. They could use the money, so this integrity thing sucks. Thank you for listening to That Wine Pod! podcast· 1h 05m· Ep 337Friends of the Pod Series -- Ep 337: Feudi di San Gregorio and the Unrivaled Wines of Campania, Italy
Feudi di San Gregorio is the largest winery in Campania region of Southern Italy. The winery has fought to bring the region to prominence in the minds of wine drinkers looking for reds and whites unlike any others in the world (that you HAVE to try!). Campania was the premier winemaking region in Italy in Ancient Roman times, but after the fall of Rome the producers chose to be grape growers/merchants, rather than winemakers. Although some made headway, it was after a large earthquake hit and destroyed much of Campania in 1980, that reinvestment in wine truly began. To support local industry, along with another family, the Capaldo family began Feudi di San Gregorio in 1986 in the town of Sorbo Serpico in the province of Avellino. One son of the family, Antonio Capaldo grew up around wine but then he pursued business, leaving Campania to obtain a Masters in Management and Economics at the London School of Economics and a PhD in Economics and Finance from a joint program between LSE and

podcast· 41:03· Ep 28Hidden Gems
Episode Notes Episode 28 – Hidden Gems After a week away, Pete and VinoMike are back! The reason for the off week was a death in Pete’s wife’s family. Gretchen’s Aunt Vicky – her Godmother – passed away suddenly. Pete spent a full week in Nebraska with her family being a supportive spouse. This show is dedicated to Aunt Vicky and we thank her for her service to our country. While away, there was a lot of family time. One thing Pete did was go to a hidden gem of a restaurant in tiny West Point, Nebraska called The Bohemian Duck. The food was incredible and the wine list surprising. He found Porter Creek Syrah and Pamplin Cabernet Sauvignon. And to pair with the duck, he was thrilled to find R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia 2007 . To find these wines in such a small place in the middle of small-town Nebraska was a real treat! VinoMike talked about a hidden gem in Las Vegas – Lotus of Siam . The spicy Thai food goes perfectly with German Riesling and Mike talks about the huge list they f

podcast· 1h 16mJohan Malan - Simonsig
Today on the podcast we have Johan Malan, Director of Wine at the historic Simonsig Estate in Stellenbosch. As you will hear in this episode, Johan is very easy to talk to, humble, and has a rather infections giggle. While he is justifiably proud of what Simonsig has achieved over the years, he is very far from resting on his laurels – as exhibited by The Grapesmith wines we reference. Simonsig is one of the grand old names in Stellenbosch whose reputation was set in motion by Johan’s father, Frans. An incredibly important person in the development of Stellenbosch as a premium wine area, the Estate system, and wine tourism in South Africa. I asked Johan on the podcast because both Cathy van Zyl MW and Michael Fridjhon on previous podcasts referenced Simonsig’s (and especially Frans’) work in setting up the Stellenbosch Wine Route, the first of its kind in South Africa, and helped pave the way for quality-minded producers that has eventually led to the fine wine revolution the country h

podcast· 21:06Kurt Moore, CEO SALBA
Today on the podcast we have Kurt Moore, CEO of SALBA – the South African Liquor Brand owners Association. According to their website, their sole objective is to represent their members, who are manufacturers and distributors of liquor products in the liquor industry of South Africa, on issues of common interest. Their members include an extensive list of heavy-hitting liquor industry stalwarts: DGB, Meridian, Vinimark, Distell, Pernod Ricard, Diageo, Stellenbosch Vineyards, KWV, Origin, Spier - - - the list goes on. When I contacted Kurt and asked him to be on the podcast, he needed very little convincing. We quickly arranged a date and time (there was only a very short window of time in which to conduct this interview) and I sent him a list of questions that would be asked. These questions were primarily concerned with SALBA’s current and future responses to the government’s current regulations around the sale and movement of liquor. The narrative in all previous communications I had

podcast· 1h 39mHiggo Jacobs
Today on the podcast we have Higgo Jacobs. Higgo has been a key figure in the South African wine industry for a decade. A certified sommelier, he was part of the founding board of the South African Sommelier Association (SASA). He was also the Chairperson for SASA for 4 years, standing down in early 2019. Higgo no longer works as a sommelier and has been a consultant for hire to the industry for a decade. In that time he has done work for various restaurants, WOSA (the export lobby group of the South African wine industry), the Nederburg Auction, numerous international publications and journalists, he also is one of South Africa’s representative palates at the Decanter World Wine Awards. If you’ve ever been to South Africa on official wine business, you’ve probably met Higgo. Most recently he has been instrumental (along with Roland Peens of Wine Cellar) in trying to create a formal secondary market for wine in South Africa. They have been working with auction house Strauss & Co, who s
