podcast· 14:07· S7E4Booze Riots and Rebellions, Part 2 - Rum | S7E4
Rum riots and rebellions on two different sides of the planet, both in the 19th century, capture our attention this week. First up is the Rum Rebellion of 1808, the rebellion formerly known as "The Great Rebellion." The second was in 1855 and is known as both the Portland Rum Riot and the Maine Law Riot. These were two battles involving the same spirit but fought for vastly different reasons. The motivation behind these episodes was simply the host's foray into rabbit holes around booze riots, as there were so many more than she originally knew, and only recently learned about. podcast· 58:42· Ep 27Towards a local understanding of diversity and inclusion: In conversation with Tomiwa Owolade
Conversations about diversity and inclusion, along with discussions about how to open the doors to Black and other marginalised groups, have been long-overdue. But, finally, the last 12 months has seen an outburst of publications and initiatives aimed at taking action. But within wine, many of the voices speaking out were American. Although some wine articles included voices from South Africa, local voices were often missing. We meet British journalist Tomiwa Owolade to discuss the complexity of the BIPOC situation in Europe and notably in the UK.

It's been a year since the murder of American George Floyd, a crime that galvanised widespread protests and political organising in the US. The world took notice and conversations, protests and other actions against racism spread internationally. Twelve months later, we meet Dr Akilah Cadet, founder of Change Cadet, a US-based change management and organizational development consulting firm supporting diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in the workplace. We take a moment to look back, measure the progress and ask what the next steps could be. What would true diversity mean for Fine Wine?

Season 2 Episode 11 – A Nebbiolo Wonder(wall) It’s VinoMike’s choice today and he brought something off the (wonder)wall – a Nebbiolo from the Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara AVA! From Andrew Jones , the 2019 Wonderwall Nebbiolo is a deliciously fun wine-drinking experience. Made from 90% Nebbiolo and 10% Barbera, this juicy California red brings that telltale high acidity and tannins wrapped in ripe and perfectly balanced New World fruit. Clocking in at a modest 13.1% ABV, you can chill this one to drink with some grilled Italian sausages any weekend this summer. The guys also talk about a few other fun wines from Andrew’s Field Recordings label, including the perfect for the heat Tang. Like a refreshing cross of slightly sparkling wine, cider, and a craft sour beer, this is one to seek out. Finally, the guys put out the call for questions for their first “Ask the Glassholes” show. What burning wine question do you want VinoMike, or maybe even Pete, to answer? Send them a note on social

podcast· 45:54· S1E9Episode 9 - Olive Kitteridge and Doughnut Duos
Welcome to Crosby, Maine, home of Olive and Henry Kitteridge and all their neighbors who fill the pages of this collection of 13 short stories. Olive Kitteridge reads much like J.D. Salinger’s 9 Stories , where the point isn’t to weave these stories into a tapestry, but to see the threads that tie them loosely together. We get to spend a day in the lives of many Crosby residents dealing with infidelity, loyalty, petty grievances, suicide, life transitions and the thoughtfulness of a well-timed doughnut to pair with red wine. This last plot point brings us to our flight of doughnuts and wines to pair with the story. Just like the breadth of characters in this book, we have a variety of wines (Lambrusco, moscato, muscatel and Sauternes) and pastries (glazed doughnut, apple fritter, lemon cronut and chocolate frosted doughnut) to sample and pair. Listen in and make some pastry pairings of your own!
