videoOnesta, Cinsault, Bechthold Vineyard, Lodi, 2013 - Featured on Wine Spies!
Last year, we introduced you to Onesta Wines and their brilliant 2012 Cinsault. That wine was incredibly popular with your fellow Operatives, and it sold in record numbers for a non-mainstream varietal. We're thrilled, today, to bring you their 2013 Bechthold Vineyard Cinsaut, a stunning wine that's even better than the prior vintage! Bright red on the nose, with Bing cherry, pomegranate, and red currant, followed by dried fall leaves, dried wild mushroom, kola nut, cedar and slate mineral. Spectacular on the palate, bursting with juicy Bing cherry, blueberry, raspberry, wild strawberry, soft spice, slate mineral, softly toasted oak, vanilla, and a hint of white pepper. So, just what is Cinsault?! Pronounced SaN-so, it is one of the 13 varieties permitted in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape region in Southern France (amazingly, there are more Cinsault vines in France than Cabernet Sauvignon vines!). One rarely finds it bottled on its own, which makes today's wine all the more special.

podcast· 50:18· S2E15We Now Return to Our Regularly Scheduled Wine Drinking
Season 2 Episode 15 – We Now Return to Our Regularly Scheduled Wine Drinking Pete and VinoMike are back! We’d say, “And better than ever,” but we can’t lie. They are here, though, and let you in on what happened during the hiatus. Hint – Life is busy, complicated, and needs much more wine. While the guys catch up, they pop a very special bottle of Syrah from Cortona in Tuscany. The 2007 Tenimenti Luigi d'Alessandro “Migliara” Syrah is literally a bottle of fun. Tannic, structured, and boasting a ton of flavor, this is a really great wine to get us back into the swing of the podcast. Mostly, this is about the guys reconnecting. If you find yourself with more questions, feel free to send a note and they’ll be happy to fill you in even more. Thank you for listening to That Wine Pod! podcast· 1h 02m· S1E42Episode 42 - Gordon Russell - Esk Valley wines, New Zealand
In this episode, I was chatting to Gordon Russell, winemaker for the last 34 years at the Esk Valley winery, in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. We naturally discussed his wines, including his Malbec based, legendary red wine, ''The Terraces'' made from a field blend of Malbec-Merlot-Cabernet Franc from a one hectare sloping, terraced vineyard that is one of New Zealand's most famous single plots. His latest wine, an Albarino of incredible quality, The Gimblett Gravels , matching food to the local Crayfish, matching wine to Reggae music and much more. Yes, there is the obligatory mention of Sauvignon-Blanc but only when we both mentioned that we completed an hour's chat without talking about... Sauvignon-Blanc!
In part two of this interview with Michael Juergens we pick up where we left off last time in "the land of the thunder dragon." What could "Bhutan in a wine glass" really mean to this tiny kingdom? We discuss the interesting way the wines labels are determined, chasing happiness, and dive a little deeper into travel, agriculture and spirits culture in Bhutan. We also learn about other projects Michael's involved in, such as the basic genius behind his award winning rum company and canned cocktails. And, because he's a master of wine candidate, you know we had to jabber a little about wine studies, exams, and failing enthusiastically. Finally, we bring it all home as we chat about the wine novels he's authored, and "Drinking and Knowing Things." podcast· 54:57· Ep 391Friends of the Pod Series -- Ep 391: Édouard Miailhe - Dynamic leader of the Margaux AOC & 5th Generation Owner of Château Siran
Château Siran is an historic and innovative estate on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, in the commune of Margaux. Once owned by the painter Toulouse-Lautrec's great-grandmother, in the mid-1800s Siran was purchased by ancestor of Édouard Miailhe's family and today he is the 6th generation to run Siran. Miailhe, like many of the most interesting people in the wine industry, had an entire career doing something other than wine (in his case finance and real estate in the Philippines) until his mother and father retired about 15 years ago and he decided to move back to France to run the Château. He likes to stay busy (and take on challenges) because in addition to being the leader of Château Siran in 2018, he took the difficult job of running the winegrowers association of Margaux, a post that was held by his predecessor for decades!
