podcast· 1h 14m· Ep 478Friends of the Pod Series -- Ep 478: Piero Mastroberardino -- the Soul of the Wines & Vines of Campania
Campania was one of the most famous wine regions of antiquity. The pedigree of Fiano, Greco, and Aglianico are well documented in literature of the time (including Pliny the Elder's Naturalis Historius)! These wines have a legacy of cultivation for more than 2000 years on this land, and since the 1700s, the Mastroberardino family have taken the lead in protecting and elevating the region and its wines. This family kept these ancient grapes alive when all others abandoned them, and have been tireless champions of the grapes, the wines, and the region for centuries. Mastroberardino has been called the "guardian" of the wine history of Campania and they are the most historically significant winery in southern Italy. Photo: Piero Mastroberardino. Credit: Kellogg Wine Selections This show features the brilliant Piero Mastroberardino , whom I had the honor and pleasure of meeting when I was in Campania. He makes one of the single best wines I have ever had (Stilèma Taurasi) and all of these

Welcome to episode 57 all about Milan, Italy. And I have to say that Milan was a really nice surprise even though we weren’t supposed to be going there. Unfortunately, we had to change plans due to flooding in Italy and we tell you all about what happened. With our weekend in Milan, we were determined to get out and explore as much as possible. Listen to hear why trying to find the Duomo started out as a very frustrating problem and the simple fix that had us in front the stunning cathedral in under 10 minutes. We also share all about the spectacular Galleria Vittorio Emanuele and the oldest café where we had breakfast. We went early to avoid the crowds and it was a great decision. Listen as we were surprised and delighted to discover the canals in Milan - complete with gondolas. We explored the canal area before we found a massive castle. Come with us as we walk through the castle with its moat, towers and seven metre thick walls, to the extensive gardens and ponds that has its own Ar

podcast· 51:04· S4E21Portugal's Fine Wines: Here Be Treasures
We all know port. But there’s a whole universe of fine Portuguese table wine out just waiting to be explored. It’s far less known but certainly no less exciting…so we dive in. Peter’s fired up after a recent trip to host a masterclass in Porto, where he tasted wines back to 1978 and recorded with a selection of Portugal’s top wine talent, from Dirk and Daniel Niepoort to Sandra Tavares, Luis Pato, Susana Esteban and Tomas Roquette. Once back, he made sure to call in some special wines to taste and share on air, including the legendary Barca Velha , Portugal’s most famous red – a wine that launched a thousand bottles… It’s not a wine you get to see very often, let alone taste, so this is a privileged insight. Let’s not beat around the bush: this is a tasting featuring a healthy amount of disagreement. These are undoubtedly fine, characterful, often intriguing wines – but they can (clearly) polarise opinion. We explore the reasons why. Also featured in this episode are (sometimes anguish

RNV 97: Gerald Casale | The Fifty By Fifty
Coco and Michelle talk with Gerald “Gerry” Casale, co-founder of DEVO and proprietor of The 50 by 50 winery. Gerry talks about the foundation of the band DEVO and how it was connected to the horrific events at Kent State in 1970, when 4 of his fellow students were shot and killed by the National Guard. That event was a pivotal point in his life: it forced him to stay at the university instead of transferring to another school, and exposed him to new ideas from visiting professors. Gerry also shares how music and his success with DEVO gave him an opportunity to try great food and wine, meeting chefs like Jeremiah Tower and Wolfgang Puck who were coming up at the same time as the band. The 50 by 50 has two current releases: The 50 by 50 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2016 and The 50 by 50 Carneros Rosé of Pinot Noir 2017. Each wine harmoniously combines Gerry’s love of music and wine.
