Als je vroeger een fles Rioja uit het schap pakte, dan kon je met 95% zekerheid zeggen dat je een rode wijn gerijpt in Amerikaanse vaten voor je had. Dat is nu niet meer zo vanzelfsprekend. Soms wordt houtrijping helemaal achterwege gelaten. Soms maken producenten gebruik van grote vaten en mogen ze de termen als reserva en crianza niet meer gebruiken. Van oudsher werd er veel Amerikaans eikenhout gebruikt, maar tegenwoordig verschijnt ook vaak Frans eikenhout ten tonele. Het aandeel witte wijn wordt groter, al is het nog steeds een kleine portie van de wijnproductie in Rioja. Außerdem läuft bereits seit zwei Jahren die Übergangszeit zu einer grundlegenden Änderung im Weinrecht, mit der die Qualität deutscher Weine neu definiert wird. Spätestens mit dem Weinjahrgang 2026 endet diese Übergangfrist, dann sind Erzeuger/innen verpflichtet, die Änderungen umzusetzen. Was die neuen Bezeichnungen bedeuten, und welche Qualität dahinter zu erwarten ist, darüber spricht Ernst Büscher (Ressortleiter Presse im Deutschen Weininstitut) mit Christian Schwörer, dem Generalsekretär des Deutschen Weinbauverbandes.
