podcast· 52:14· Ep 35IWP Ep35 The Alhambra Valley 1850-1915 - Experimentation, Education, Conservation - Strentzel, Swett and Muir - Historical Episode
Historical Episode IWP Ep35 The Alhambra Valley 1850-1915 - Experimentation, Education, Conservation - Strentzel, Swett and Muir. This episode is about family and Friends in a small valley in the golden age of Pomology. They all are named John somewhat confusingly and all are referred to as the “Father” of something, John Swett’s son Frank is also a large part of the episode. Although Strentzel and Muir aren’t best known as winemakers, Strentzel was trained in it and did make wine and his agricultural work was ahead of its time and still informs what is happening today. Muir is our connecting point between the 2 families. When we get to the Swetts, - viticulture and winemaking will be the focus and they were well respected and known. Their work informs us today as well, especially if you grew up in California. The Wine Makers – Julien Barrot, Domaine La Barroche
This week we welcome Julien Barrot from Domaine La Barroche, a property in Châteauneuf-du-Pape that has been making wine since the 14th century. The youngest in the family, he has the strong character of these winemakers who invest themselves in their profession and their appellation. Julien arrived on the estate in 2002, barely 22 years old, fresh from his training in oenology, with a business school diploma in his pocket. With an infinite thirst for learning, he is one of those “committed” generations where curiosity and open-mindedness perfectly complement the respect for the terroir and the know-how passed on by their elders. After several vintages and meticulous parcel selection, the estate now owes him its various cuvées with such singular personalities: Julien Barrot, Pure, Fiancée and Liberty. 16, chemin du Clos 84230 Chateauneuf du Pape @domainelabarroche contact@domainelabarroche.com

podcast· 44:46· S5E15Grower Champagne with Lea & Sandeman
From big brand to fine wine - it's no exaggeration to say that grower champagne has changed the notion of what champagne can and should be. Pioneers like Francis Egly of iconic grower champagne Egly-Ouriet have invested huge amounts of time and money prioritising their vineyards, relentlessly focusing on quality and terroir expression in their wines - and ultimately going up against the big Champagne houses. It's a brave move, but one that is reinvigorating the region and attracting many converts to the cause. In this episode we chat with Francis Egly and his daughter Clemence to hear their thoughts on why it's important to harvest their grapes ripe, age their bottles extensively and see the process through from growing grapes to selling their wine. We also hear from Charles Lea, owner and director of respected London wine merchant Lea & Sandeman , on how a lockdown trip to Champagne saw him move away from the 'boring' big production houses and embrace the growers' cause. Along the way
