Greg La Follette, Marchelle Wines founder and winemaker, is back on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. Greg is coming from the winery, where they are busy with harvest time. He is going right back too, after the show. He was a chemist and did some work in early Aids research and then went back to school in food science and enology. Greg had the good fortune to work at Beaulieu Vineyards under André Tchelistcheff. They had similar technical backgrounds. André challenged Greg, telling him that he would learn the heart and soul of wine if he came to work for him, rather than stay in the lab. Greg turned out to become one of André’s greatest disciples. Visit Chigazola Merchants online to shop their unique selection of fine Italian wines. They are drinking a Colombard, which was once the most widely planted white wine grape up until the early ‘7.
podcast· 47:29· Ep 94Behind the Label: Private Label Wines with Plata Wine Partners' Alison Crowe, Ep 94
There's more to a wine label than meets the eye. Most of us buy wine in the store and when we do, we picture that bottle coming from a small winery nestled among the vines somewhere in wine country. But did you know a growing chunk of popular labels don't have their own winery or winemaking team? They are private label wines contracted out to a third party winery who supplies the grapes, the winemaking team and creates a company's vintage vision. A great example that most of us can relate to is Costco’s Kirkland Brand or Trader Joe's wine. We're exploring the world of private label wines with one of the best in the business. Alison Crowe is Vice President of winemaking at Plata Wine Partners and she helps create more than 100 labels for clients near and far. If you've never heard the term private label when it comes to wine, you may be surprised to learn that many of the most popular wine brands are made by talented winemakers whose names or wineries are not on the label. In fact, Aliso
podcast· 1h 14m· S7E62E62 - Wiston Estate, Sussex, England
For Episode 62, we're heading to England to explore the country's booming wine industry. Our guests are Kirsty Goring, co-owner and Brand Director, along with the brilliant winemaker Marcus Rayner-Ward, from Wiston Estate in Sussex, England. Owned by Kirsty and her husband, Rick Goring, Wiston Estate is more than just a winery—it's a fully functioning farm, home to a restaurant called Chalk, and even offers several properties for rent. Their sparkling wines are so exceptional, they could make even the finest Champagne producers rethink their craft. When most of us think of England, we imagine shepherd's pie, fish & chips, tea, and a cracking G&T. But now, wine—especially sparkling wine—deserves a spot on that list. While this may feel new to some, it's actually more of a revival. Winemaking in England dates back to the Roman era, and English wines thrived in the Middle Ages. However, the industry declined in the 18th and 19th centuries due to climate shifts and the rise of imported Fre
