podcast· 46:29· S1E161Are Layer Cake Wines Any Good?
We had mixed expectations about Layer Cake Wines. On the one hand, Layer Cake was started by a winemaker who produces some of the most expensive and highest rated wines in the U.S. via their Hundred Acre label. On the other hand, “layer cake” is hardly a name one would give a sophisticated, serious wine. So which one is it? In this latest episode, we try to give Layer Cake wines an honest shot to impress us, reserving our judgment until we had the chance to taste them. We’ll let you judge for yourself, but in our opinion, these are not good wines, or at least not wines for anyone who is serious about wine. And maybe that’s the point. Very similar to our experience with Josh Wines, we think you can do much better at their price point. Wines reviewed in this episode: 2022 Layer Cake Creamy Chardonnay, 2021 Layer Cake Cabernet Sauvignon. Send us a Text Message and we'll respond in our next episode! Smell, taste and put these wines together for me.” A small amount of another wine blended in can make a huge difference in a final result. podcast· 59:49· Ep 158Blindflug 158: Fight the Fomo!
Today we’re hearing from Shane Hunt, Wine Buyer at Piazzas fine foods. Upon starting at Piazzas, Shane did a complete overhaul of the wine section, putting the focus on smaller, local, low intervention wines. We discuss what it takes to sell these types of wines in a grocery environment. How it feels to hook someone up with a zero/zero wine from Sonoma instead of a generic blend from a large brand. And what smaller producers can do to get their wines into the hands of a more casual wine consumer. The Wine Makers – Laurent Gomez, Domaine du Val de Rois
This week, we sit down with Laurent Gomez from Domaine du Val des Rois , a winery whose name translates to “Valley of the King,” paying tribute to Valréas’ rich winemaking history, first planted in the 9th century by King Charlemagne. Val des Rois is a 10-hectare estate in Côtes du Rhône, originally planted in 1965 by 9th-generation Burgundian winemaker Romain Bouchard. Located on the northern edge of the Southern Rhône in Valréas, the vineyard benefits from its unique altitude and southeast exposure, cooling nightly air from the Alps, and soils rich in limestone and deep clay. These natural conditions lead to wines with exceptionally high acidity, setting them apart from the typical Southern Rhône profile. At the hands of legendary winemaker Stéphane Vedeau, Val des Rois produces truly distinctive wines. We had the pleasure of tasting: A White Blend, An 80-year-old vine Grenache, A Grenache/Syrah blend, All wines are aged in concrete, giving them purity, vibrancy, and a true homage to
