Tamás Kovács from St. Donat Winery
Vivien Magyar from Borett Wines, Hungary's premier boutique wine agency founded by Maria Antoanett Crab, interviewed Tamás Kovács , winemaker at Szent Donat Estate in Csopak, Lake Balaton. Established in 1994, the Kovács family purchased St Donat to continue over 200 years of vineyard legacy and in 2011 Tamás Kovács was one of the joint-creators of the Codex of Csopak, a registered system that monitors high quality viticulture in the region. St Donat wines are unique thanks to the volcanic soil on the western shores of Lake Balaton, a beautiful lake in the west of Hungary, with some vines even growing in the crater of the Tihany volcano. Ben Franks worked with St Donat wines for 8 years while CEO and wine buyer of Novel Wines, the multi-award-winning wine retailer specialised in central and eastern Europe. It is with pleasure to continue to share the story of vineyard and wines. Find out more about Borett wines here: https://www.borett.com/ Visit https://benfranks.wine/ for more grea

podcast· 1h 04m· Ep 409He Was Told To Get His Affairs In Order. Not So Fast Says Jean-Noel of Chateau Potelle
I went back into my archives and found a newsletter from 1998. I had featured the Chateau Potelle 1995 Zinfandel and I remember the wine well. On a recent trip to Napa, after 28 years, I decided it would be nice to check in with Jean-Noel. I am not sure why I waited so long! In this episode of Wine Talks, I sit with Jean-Noel and dive into the world of wine with a sprinkle of humor and a good dash of philosophy. Jean-Noel, a seasoned veteran, opposes the American habit of rating wines, comparing it to rating one's most cherished moments. He emphasizes that wine should celebrate emotions and culture rather than serve as an ego booster. With a vineyard history as rich as a well-oaked Chardonnay, Jean-Noel's approach is all about making memories—not just products. Passionate about wine and life, he quips that wine, like art, is made to share and enjoy, even if it ends up as fond memories and...well, you get the drift! Cheers to wines that speak of places and times, and people who embrace

Ep 211: The Ultimate Chenin Blanc Quiz with Liam D'Arcy aka The Wine Wally - Will They Pass or Fail?
Welcome back Wine friends! In this episode, I’m joined by Liam D’Arcy, better known as The Wine Wally on Instagram, a wine enthusiast who has built a thriving online community of over 104,000 followers. Unlike my usual guests—winemakers, sommeliers, or Masters of Wine—Liam is a passionate self-taught wine lover who has made wine education fun, fresh, and approachable. Now, he’s taken on a bold challenge: mastering everything there is to know about Chenin Blanc. To put his knowledge to the test, I quiz Liam on the flavors, styles, and top regions for Chenin Blanc, from its spiritual home in the Loire Valley to the powerhouse vineyards of South Africa. We explore the difference between Vouvray and Savennières, the role of noble rot in sweet wines, and the surprising history of Chenin in California. But the challenge doesn’t stop there—I throw him into a rapid-fire round of global wine labeling terms to see if he can decipher everything from “Trocken” to “Feinherb.” Before diving in, I ha
