A Quick Trip to Hendersonville
One of our favorite North Carolina Wine regions to visit is the area just south of Asheville surrounding Hendersonville, NC. There you’ll find 7 unique wineries and vineyards each with a distinctive setting. This region also hosts an American Viticulture Area known as the Crest of the Blue Ridge, Henderson County. We recently had theContinue reading →
videoRockburn The Chosen Abel Central Otago Pinot Noir 2023
Let me introduce you to The Chosen Abel Pinot Noir from 2023. The Chosen range focuses on specific clones or vineyard sites, allowing us to dig deep into the unique characteristics that define what we craft as winemakers to create the signature Rockburn Pinot Noir. Abel refers to one of the clones we’ve planted at our Parkburn site. It’s grown in several areas, but this wine comes from a single parcel. From that parcel, I’ve carefully selected just four barrels to showcase this clone’s distinctive qualities. Abel is known for being a more tannic clone, and this wine emphasises that characteristic, giving you a closer look at one of the building blocks we use in our blends. For this bottling, we’ve avoided using new oak, allowing the pure fruit character of the clone to take center stage. It’s a deep dive into the details of our winemaking process—nerdy, yes, but something I think you’ll find fascinating!
videoRockburn The Chosen 777 Parkburn Central Otago Pinot Noir 2023
Hi folks, I’m here to introduce you to The Chosen 777 Pinot Noir from 2023. The Chosen is a range we created to highlight very specific clones or vineyard sites, diving deep into the finer details of what makes our vineyard unique. It’s a chance to explore and share the precise characteristics our site offers through its fruit. 777 refers to the clone used for this wine, which we’ve planted in a couple of spots on our Parkburn site. This particular bottling comes from a single parcel of fruit, resulting in just four carefully selected barrels. We intentionally avoid using new oak in this bottling—at most, we use one-year-old barrels. This approach ensures the oak plays a supporting role, allowing the pure, intrinsic fruit quality of this specific clone to shine through. It’s a fascinating wine to explore, offering an authentic glimpse into the nuances of our craft as winemakers and the exceptional fruit our vineyard produces.

podcast· 43:54· Ep 445Science, Grapes, and Adventure: A Wine Student's Summer at Chateau Haut-Bailly
A few years ago, a young woman was interning at the Original Wine of the Month Club. Her internship revolved around social networking, office duties, and one particular job that may have set her career path. Lisa Kassabian was to write the talking points for all my podcasts that featured a woman in wine. She would research the guest, write up peritnent points, present the to me and together we would redirect or correct. When that work was completed, Lisa was invited on set to hear how her questions worked and how the guest would respond. Maybe I had something to do with it, it would certainly make sense...because eventually, Lisa became an Enology student at Cornell University. At the University, all students in this curriculum are required to do an internship before they graduate. This is the story of Lisa's internship at the famed Chateau Haut Bailly. For sure, if you want to know the insights a young wine Enology student might gain from the academic side and the practical side of wi

Lauren Clark: Oral History Interview
This interview is with Lauren Clark of Bergström Wines. In this interview, Lauren talks about how she got into wine and why she wants to continue learning. Lauren shares about growing up in central California in an agricultural region, and how it was always part of her life. She moved to Oregon to attend Oregon State University, get out of California, and get away from agricultural work. Instead, she started in the food science program.
