The Parrot Room
This post is brought to you in partnership with Spoonflower.com . What do you do when you inherit a 32-year-old Blue & Gold Macaw from your childhood best friend’s (still my best friend) mom? Well, obvi you design a room around him. Meet Max. He came to live with us just after we moved into this house in 2022. It was decided that the best place for his GINORMOUS blue cage was the dining room—which was and still is being used as my office space (until we can build out my future chicken studio space). Putting a macaw in my office was definitely…a choice. There is nothing more professional on a work call or zoom meeting than a macaw screaming or singing opera in the background. It’s fine! It’s fine. We hadn’t gotten started yet on any home remodeling projects when Max arrived, and so the office was still very much a blank white slate (if you’ll recall, our 1940’s Monterey Revival style home had unfortunately fallen into the hands of some pretty unskilled flippers who tried to turn

Whiskey Review: Old Elk Infinity Blend
Introduction This week on the Film & Whiskey podcast, we’re diving into the 2023 edition of Old Elk Infinity Blend , a unique yearly experiment from the Colorado-based distillery. We’ve had Old Elk on the show before, but it’s been a while, so we were excited to see what their latest Infinity Blend has to offer. This particular iteration features a blend of Old Elk’s own distillate, marking the first time they’ve skipped sourcing from other producers (aside from a small leftover portion from the 2022 blend). The breakdown of the blend is: 15.3% of the 2022 Infinity Blend 40% high malt bourbon (8 years) 43.2% wheat whiskey (7 years) 1.5% wheat whiskey (10 years) The whiskey clocks in at 111.15 proof (55.575% ABV) and is classified as a blended whiskey , not a bourbon, due to the combination of mashbills. With all that background out of the way, let’s jump into our review. This review was taken from the episode " Her (2013) / Old Elk Infinity Blend

Desperately Seeking Better (NA) Beer
I often wonder how to rate or judge non-alcoholic beers and then communicate in a way that people who are looking for NA options can understand. Realistically, the depth of the field isn't the best and there is a wild chasm between great and good, even more so between mid and bad. I guess it's a young(ish) industry that will need some time to really find its legs, if it can be profitable enough to force quality to the forefront and not just an add on to entice the DD to stick around so everyone can have a few more Pints before heading home with a six pack or two. Even some of the breweries that are entirely focused on making NA beers can have terrible products side by side with some really fine offerings. The lack of quality control, coupled with an uneducated and/or desperate consumer base has made for a rush to market for a lot of things and an acceptance of that's just how things are...but I think there is a real opportunity as we move forward in the Sober and So

Don’t call it Burgundy: How to find great wines for less from France’s Bourgogne region
Way back in the 1990s, when I began visiting “Burgundy,” as it was then commonly called, in France, it was not so easy to navigate the region’s many wine producers, villages and restaurants. There was little readily available information on the internet. English was rarely spoken and arranging tastings at the many small, family-owned domaines […]
