As Dry July draws to a close, I do a Not Serious cost-benefit analysis on the whole gig, and I pay tribute to someone who was a leading advocate for the advantages of a world with wine in it, The Prop, our beloved Sam Neill. Every year, drinking undergoes a dramatic rebrand. One minute we’re happily opening bottles because it’s a Thursday in December. The next, everyone is clutching a sparkling water and announcing they’ve never felt better — all because the name of the month sounds witty when paired with the word dry.
