Climate Change and Innovations in Winemaking In this episode of After Wine School, hosts Keith Wallace and Alana Zerbe delve into the impact of climate change on the wine industry. Though the topic is inherently dark, they provide an optimistic look at how winemakers and regions are adapting and innovating. They discuss historical shifts in wine regions due to climate change, current challenges such as extreme weather, and the various innovative strategies being employed to mitigate these changes. Emerging wine regions and the surprising winners benefiting from climate shifts, like England, Tasmania, and Canada, are also highlighted. videoCantine Povero Priore Barolo 2021 | The King Has Arrived!
This week on Stop Wasting Your Wine, we bring an exciting close to our Nebbiolo journey. We are diving into Barolo, the king of wines, and pouring the Priore Barolo 2021 from Cantine Povero. We look back at the bottles that led us here, compare Barolo with Barbaresco, and talk through what makes Nebbiolo so special. Expect honest thoughts on tannin, age, and why patience is part of the Barolo experience. On this episode, we share our tasting notes, explore how this wine evolves in the glass, and give appreciation to the producers behind it. Then the mood shifts as we roll out a new game called Merlot or Malarkey, where we try to separate real wine facts from pure fiction. We wrap by talking about the value of wine community and the joy of learning together. If you are curious about Nebbiolo or want a deeper feel for Barolo, this episode brings you right into the conversation. Okanagan Valley Wines: Resilience in the Face of Adversity
It’s been a rough few years for British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley wine producers. A region once defined by boundless promise is now navigating a new normal marked by climate volatility, crop loss, and uncertainty. And yet, in the glass, hope still speaks and often very eloquently. I recently sat down to taste a handful of wines from two premiere Okanagan wineries. They reinforced an already firmly held conviction of just how important this region is to Canada’s fine wine landscape. But first, let’s talk about the storm the industry is weathering. Fire, Deep Freezes, and the Fight to Survive The Okanagan has endured a brutal string of vintages. It started with the catastrophic 2021 wildfires. That summer, blazes tore through the South Okanagan, shutting down tasting rooms and threatening livelihoods. The aftermath was equally devastating. Many 2021 wines showed clear signs of smoke taint, forcing wineries to declassify or discard entire cuvées. Some producers skipped bottling altogethe

Stuck
I'm stuck in a rut. It has been 49 days since my last post, I have several other writing projects stacked up, waiting to be completed, I am just not happy enough with them yet. I need something to break the log jam. So here is my crazy idea, I am just going to write whatever random boozy thoughts pop into my head each and every day for the rest of July, including when I am in Florida on vacation. Maybe I will find something new in the Austrian newspaper archive that I love to trawl, maybe it will be a few lines of total tosh that just needs someone to comment that I am completely wrong, or right, or that you've been feeling the same but unable to say it. Maybe I won't stress myself out with long form essays, maybe I'll just post pictures of my homebrew, or other good beers I am enjoying, or more likely at the moment, something about the glories of cider in Virginia. Maybe a commenter (remember those?) will ask a question looking for my opinion on something? Who knows? I need to b

Y'all are going to LOVE today's episode. I spoke with Somatic Sobriety Coach, Elan Hardy. Before she was ten years old, Elan had smoked weed and taken mushroom, which was common in the culture in which she was raised - traveling with the Grateful Dead as a child and teenager. Her early drug use escalated into opiate addiction as an adult. After getting sober, Elan discovered somatic therapy is a form of body-centered therapy that looks at the connection of mind and body and uses both psychotherapy and physical therapies for holistic healing. In addition to talk therapy, somatic therapy practitioners use mind-body exercises and other physical techniques to help release the pent-up tension that negatively affects a patient’s physical and emotional wellbeing. Elan is certified in Somatic work and is also an addict in recovery. Combining her training and lived experience, Elan specializes in somatic and sobriety coaching. Ask a Sake Pro: What Sake Should Be Served Hot?
Sake tends to be a hot and cold subject — either people could never imagine drinking a steaming cup of warmed sake, or they wouldn’t dare to pull a bottle straight from the fridge. Some even think that if a sake needs to be heated, then it is automatically low-quality. But according to Austin Power, owner of Accidental Bar in Manhattan’s East Village, that can’t be further from the truth. podcast· 51:12· S1E208Portuguese Wine Primer: Douro Branco — Portugal's Best White Under $15?
Have you ever picked up a Portuguese wine, stared at the label, and thought... I have absolutely no idea what this means? Same! And here's the thing: Douro Branco might be Portugal's best white wine value that no one is talking about. So this week, we are fixing that! In this episode, we break down what Douro Branco actually means, why the Douro Valley's brutal climate and ancient vines produce some of the most interesting white wines in Europe, and what the heck "field blends" are and why they make this wine so different from almost anything else you'll find on the shelf. We also give you a quick Portuguese wine vocabulary lesson so you can stop being scared of the words on the label. Then we taste and review two Douro Branco wines, both under $15, to find out if either one earns a spot on your dinner table. Spoiler: one of them made the cut! Wines tasted and reviewed: 2023 Quinta Das Carvalhas Douro White Blend, 2024 Symington Family Estates Rio Belo Douro Branco Send us a Text Messa

The Corkscrew Concierge’s (In)Conspicuous Consumption June 2025
These days, it’s hard to figure out how best to share the interesting and amazing wines that I have the privilege to enjoy. Wines that resonate with me that I think others would enjoy. Back in the day, you’d do an Instagram post with great photography and it would get tons of views and some conversation. Now you have to dance, have a full blown conversation, or do whatever the theme of the day is. I still just want to talk to people about wine. I don’t want to have to dance. So, I’m talking about and sharing some great wines from the past month here, most of which feature 2 pillars that are important to me - family-owned wineries and those that emphasize sustainability. This isn’t everything we drank, but these are worth spreading the word… It’s always cool to look back on places you’ve visited when you grab a bottle from the store. Winzer Krems was a standout during a trip to Austria.
