podcast· 49:45Alternative Wine Packaging with Melissa Saunders MW
In this episode, host and Master Sommelier Chris Tanghe interviews Master of Wine Melissa Saunders about progressive wine packaging. They discuss the use of bag-in-box (BIB) packaging for fine wine, dispelling the stereotype that these containers are only for cheap beverages. For Melissa's Master of Wine Research Paper, the final part of the certification process, she studied alternative wine packaging. What she learned while writing it was so compelling that she founded Communal Brands, a bag-in-box import company that partners with high-quality producers to bring great wine to consumers with a drastically reduced carbon footprint. Melissa lives in upstate New York, runs marathons, and is an attorney specializing in alcohol beverage law. Thanks for listening. If you enjoy this episode, please leave us a review, as it helps us connect and grow the GuildSomm community. Cheers! videoFlying Over Terroir - La Morra village guide
Today we explore the highest village in the Barolo area, known for its panoramic views and some of the most elegant expressions of Nebbiolo. In this series, we’ll focus on each single village of the Langhe, understanding the terroir, flying over the most famous vineyards and naming some of the most iconic producers. Located on a hilltop at about 513 meters above sea level, La Morra dominates the western side of the Barolo region. With around 2,700 residents, it’s one of the largest villages in the area and has long been a strategic point for controlling the surrounding valleys. Today, it’s equally famous for its postcard views — from the Alps in the distance to the sea of vineyards rolling below. La Morra is home to about 1/3 of all Barolo vineyards, with nearly 850 hectares planted to Nebbiolo, making it the single largest contributor to the appellation. It also has an impressive 39 MGA vineyards, many of them considered among the most prestigious. Geologically, La Morra is part of th

213: James Molesworth - Wine Spectator
This Jim sits down with James Molesworth, Senior Editor for The Wine Spectator, to trace James's unconventional path into wine—from a Francophile, academic household in Queens to blind-tasting Burgundy in a tiny West Village cellar, and eventually orchestrating tastings and writing for one of the most influential wine publications in the world. James reflects on formative mentors, the discipline and humility required to learn both tasting and journalism at a professional level, and how his anthropology background shaped his "observe and report" style of wine writing. He also unpacks Wine Spectator's mission to educate and entertain, the magazine's role in the global wine ecosystem, and how landmark moments like the post‑9/11 New York Wine Experience revealed the deep, relationship-driven core of the wine community. The conversation then widens to a rich exploration of regional evolution and the future of fine wine, focusing especially on Bordeaux and Napa Valley. James explains how Bor
