videoWhat Happens When a Vineyard Gets 48 Hours of Rain
One phone call changed everything. Rampant berry split across our Clare Valley vineyard. Every plan we had for red wine this year — Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto — was thrown out the window in 48 hours. Berries cracked open like little Pac-Men, botrytis already moving in, and we're at least three weeks from ripeness. This is the episode where vintage 2026 stopped being fun. We rallied in two hours flat — bins on a truck, drove to Clare, pivoted the Sangiovese program from red wine to rosé, switched from hand harvest to machine harvest, and got fruit off the vine before disease could take hold. But the bigger question is what happens to everything else that's still hanging. Then I drove to the Riverland expecting the worst — and found the opposite. Sandy soils, competitive cover crop, and barely a split berry in sight. The same rain. Completely different outcome. And the reason might be the one thing every viticulturist wants to rip out of their vineyard. This episode cov

William Fèvre is one of them. Widely considered one of the top producers in the region, the estate owns over 15 hectares of Grand Cru vineyards, more than half of its holdings planted in Premier and Grand Cru sites. Few producers know Chablis better. Today’s offer is the 2021 William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Bougros. Bougros sits at the base of the Grand Cru slope, traditionally producing broader, richer expressions of Chablis while still showcasing the region’s signature Kimmeridgian limestone minerality. The 2021 vintage was cooler and challenging, with frost dramatically reducing yields. But the best producers delivered stunning, classic wines reminiscent of ben

videoDiscovering Hideaway Vineyard at Chappellet | Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon on Pritchard Hill
A vision takes root on Pritchard Hill as Hideaway Vineyard comes to life with the 2023 vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL068UMwCb_ugKIGEWyt7sbeDuYUgJ5l0D This film explores the origin and evolution of Hideaway Cabernet Sauvignon through conversation with the family, winemakers, and the team who shaped it. What began years ago as an idea on a rugged hillside became a deliberate and patient undertaking. Land was studied and planted with intention. Farming decisions were made with elevation, exposure, and long-term character in mind. Though centered around the current release, the story reaches back to the beginning. The interviews reveal not only how the vineyard was developed, but why. A few aerial perspectives place the vineyard in its broader setting on Pritchard Hill, offering context to the terrain that defines the wine. This is a study in foresight, stewardship, and belief in place. A conversation about commitment to land and the slow wor

podcast· 53:16· Ep 517Behind the Bottle: The Human Stories and Craft of Tuscan Winemaking with Ivo Assanelli
This is what is so interesting about the wine trade. It takes a ton of passion to do this, it is hard work and sometimes, without the passion, it just feels like a vanity project. At Caiarosa in Italy, the passion extends from Bordeaux France. I have had the pleasure to sit with the Director of the famed Chateau Giscours, a 2nd growth Bordeaux, and find their story and approach solid, but adventurous. Enter Caiarosa on the west side of Tuscany; a solidly Tuscan winery employing the methodes and thought processes of Bordeaux; sounds mixed up? Have a listen and find out why this makes sense. Ivo Assanelli may not travel with a corkscrew in one hand and a passport in the other, but after this conversation, you'll swear he's unlocked the essence of Tuscany with each bottle he opens. This episode invites listeners into a world where the liquid in your glass is no ordinary beverage—it's a vessel for stories, heritage, and profound emotion. Paul Kalemkiarian hosts a discussion that sweeps you
