2017 Mastroberardino Taurasi Radici Riserva | Connoisseurs Club October 2026

THE STORY Taurasi is often called “the Barolo of the South,” made in the mountains inland and uphill from Naples. It is one of the coolest corners of the Italian south, where harvest can run into November, and was the first red wine in the south to earn DOCG status. Greek settlers brought vines here long before the Roman Republic, and the Aglianico grape takes its name from the word “Hellenic” because of those origins. Mastroberardino has been farming their land for ten generations, and refused to replace Aglianico with easier to grow varieties. Here, in Taurasi, Aglianico produces a wine that’s structured, savory, mineral, and built for long evolution—and the Radici Riserva is one of its very greatest examples. We’ve occasionally been accused of being obsessed with Cabernet—fine, sometimes we’re guilty as charged—but the list of the world’s great red grapes is long and varied. So for this shipment of the Connoisseurs Club, we wanted to explore truly great bottles beyond Cab. Our first wine is a signature bottling from one of California’s great producers of Pinot Noir, Dragonette Cellars. Vinous called them “one of the most consistent and impressive wineries in Santa Barbara,” and their Fiddlestix Vineyard Pinot is the original vineyard they ever worked with. Winemaker Brandon Sparks-Gillis described it to us as a “Goldilocks site” and the ‘23—born from one of California’s greatest-ever vintages—shows a combination of richness and finesse that captivates from first sip. THE STORY Some pairings work by contrast; this one works by agreement. The sanguine, feral quality of the venison meets the same quality in the Castello di Neive—a Stupino family estate drawing on Neive’s best sites—and Nebbiolo’s own undertones of truffle and mushroom meet the porcini and black truffle laid beneath the plate. Like on like, straight through, which is why the kitchen turns it up to 11 rather than dialing it back. 2023 Domaine Michel Magnien Cote de Nuits-Villages Burgundy | The Waitlist Club October 2026

THE STORY Fjord trout is rich and high in oil, and the instinct is to reach for a white with cutting acidity. Oriole reaches instead for a village Burgundy from Magnien’s Demeter-certified biodynamic parcels in Brochon, which does the same work. As the fat absorbs the wine’s acidity, the dish’s fennel, dill, and chive push forward and lend the wine a dimension it doesn’t show alone—while the toasted edge of the dehydrated trout skin draws out the subtle oak of its used-barrel élevage. THE STORY Sandoval calls this one of his favorite pairings Oriole has done. Oregon Chardonnay carries a rare balance of richness and acidity, and Wagyu needs both—acid to cut a very high fat content, weight to stand alongside it rather than vanish. Keith Emerson’s reduction and discreet oak pick up the char off the binchotan grill, while the fruit purity he gets from pressing whole clusters keeps the bitterness of the red endive and rhubarb from taking over the plate. THE STORY Lamb and Syrah is a classic for a reason, and here the reason compounds. The gamey character of the lamb and the Syrah intensify each other, and the pickled gooseberries brighten the wine. Both the gooseberries and the Jimmy Nardello peppers carry pyrazines, the compounds behind savory, vegetal flavors—and so does Syrah, fermented here on whole clusters at 2,500 feet.
