Musgo Wednesday: Wine for the Giro d’Italia, Northern Italy
“The execution of the laws is more important than the making of them.” –Thomas Jefferson The concept was rather straightforward, but as with most projects in life, it was the execution (or lack thereof) that was the key and, well, … Continue reading →
podcast· 42:15Clark Smith, Winemaker and Author
Clark Smith, winemaker , author and frequent California Wine Country guest, is back with Dan Berger and Daedalus Howell. His last time on the show was this episode on April 3 of this year . Professor Damien Wilson from Sonoma State University is also with us, from the previous on-air segment. He runs the Wine Business Institute at SSU . Clark Smith has a new book coming out, called The Myth of Science: A Winemaker Recommends Repairs. He has a Substack called Confessions of a Renegade Winemaker where he posts occasional excerpts from the book. Clark loves the Santa Cruz mountains which he considers the best winegrowing region in California. Down the hill from Ridge there is a vineyard called Bates Ranch that grows some Grenache. Sometimes, the wine doesn’t “color up” so they made some sparkling wine from it. Clark has brought a bottle of that. Later he will open the red from the same vintage. Clark says his favorite Dan Berger quote is, “I

Whiskey Review: Almost Old Bones Bourbon
Introduction In this week’s review, we’re diving into Almost Old Bones Bourbon , a 9-year-old whiskey from Backbone Bourbon Company, sourced from Bardstown, Kentucky and bottled at 110 proof. Despite the cheeky name, this isn’t a young whiskey—it's a high-rye bourbon aged just shy of a decade and meant to bridge the gap between Backbone’s standard offerings and their 10+ year “Old Bones” line. Batch No. 1 of Almost Old Bones was released at an MSRP of $89, and it caught our eye thanks to its bold labeling and generous proof point. We poured it neat and let it ride—here’s how it fared. This review is taken from our episode " Prisoners (2013) / Almost Old Bones Bourbon ." Click the link to listen to this review in audio format. Nose Brad: This is just a really beautiful honey, caramel, apple peel, brown sugar. It has all sorts of deep, rich bourbon notes going on. But the honey is what stood out to me—there’s a little bit

While most people get sleepy after a few drinks, 8% of the population has a gene variant that triggers a massive dopamine surge and energy spike instead. These are the people still buzzing at 3 AM while everyone else has crashed. But don’t be fooled, whether alcohol makes you sleepy or hyper, it’s still inhibiting your prefrontal cortex and stealing your cognitive edge. videoIf I tell you "do not think about a pink elephant," what’s the first thing that pops into your head?
If I tell you "do not think about a pink elephant," what’s the first thing that pops into your head? Exactly. When you walk around saying "I shouldn't drink" or "I need to quit," your brain stays hyper-focused on the very thing you're trying to avoid. You're reinforcing the habit by keeping it center stage. To break the cycle, you have to shift your language from what you’re avoiding to what you’re becoming. Instead of "I'm quitting," try "I prioritize my clarity" or "I easily choose water and high energy." Follow @jamesswanwick for the best alcohol-free content! #alcoholfree #quitdrinking #wine #alcohol

Is non-alcoholic wine actually wine? The government doesn't even call it wine anymore. Discover the legal truth about NA wine. What questions does this video answer? Does non-alcoholic wine actually contain zero alcohol? What is the legal alcohol percentage required for a beverage to be considered wine? Why does the FDA regulate dealcoholized wine? About This Video: Is non-alcoholic wine actually wine? The answer is complicated. First, it doesn't start as grape juice—it starts as fully fermented wine, just like any bottle on your wine rack. Then, someone decides to take the alcohol out. But legally, the government doesn't even call this wine anymore. To legally be a wine, a bottle has to sit between 7 and 24 percent alcohol. When the alcohol is pulled out, it is no longer regulated as wine; it is regulated by the FDA, the same people who regulate grocery store food. Furthermore, "non-alcoholic" does not actually mean zero alcohol. In the US, it legally means the beverage is under

Day 10 With No Alcohol: What to Expect Physically and Emotionally (and When to Get Help)
Day 10 with no alcohol is a big milestone. You are far enough from your last drink to notice real changes, yet close enough that withdrawal and cravings may still feel intense. For some people, day 10 feels amazing. For others, it feels like “I made it this far, but I’m exhausted and still want to drink.” Both experiences are common. What you feel today depends on how much and how often you drank, your overall health, and whether your detox was medically supervised. If you stopped heavy daily drinking on your own, day 10 can still feel rough and even risky. If you completed a supervised detox and are now in rehab or outpatient care, you may be more stable but still emotionally raw. Ep 186 Who Gets Wine’s Attention? What Paso Can Teach Us – Featuring Wine Enthusiast’s Emily Saladino
🍇 Where Wine Takes You, Episode Highlights 🍷 This week, Adam sits down with Emily Saladino, wine and food writer, editor, recipe developer, wine columnist for The Washington Post, and writer-at-large for Wine Enthusiast. The conversation starts with Emily’s Wine Enthusiast piece asking why Gen X a generation with serious spending power and years of wine experience, so often disappears from the industry conversation. From there, Adam and Emily take the question through a Paso Robles lens: What happens when wineries get so focused on finding the next customer that they stop noticing the loyal one who has been showing up for twenty years? They also get into wine education, expertise without intimidation, trusting your own palate, the current slowdown in wine, language that welcomes people instead of shutting them out, and Emily’s wonderfully sharp description of wine as “beautifully inefficient.” The conversation ultimately becomes less about one generation and more about attention: who
