Endurance
Two years ago I had my first encounter with the beers from Tom Crean Brewery in Kenmare, and for the most part I wasn't impressed. Still, they're rare enough in Dublin, so when I recently found a different three in Blackrock Cellar I thought it only fair to give them another shake. I say different, but one of the last set was called Killowen Kölsch, and now there's a beer with identical branding, an identical 4.2% ABV, but it's called Killowen Lager . Optimistically, I thought perhaps the brewery has invested in technology that lets them do cold fermentation properly, though it may simply be that the PGI enforcement squad from Cologne got in touch and made the appropriate threats. Either way, this is a different beer. Gone is the brackish flatness and instead it's a sunny unfiltered sunset yellow with oodles of busy crackling foam on top. The aroma is unsettlingly sweet and apple-like, like Cidona or the similar sugared-up alcopops which pass for mainstream cider in this unfortunate co

Viña Salceda Entresierras, Rioja
While I’ve previously reviewed the wines of Viña Salceda here, when it comes to their white offer, to date it’s only been the more general ‘Blanco’. This bottle of Entresierras shifts things up a great deal. For starters, the blend is quite wild as while there’s the typical base of Viura/Macabeu and the now, more-typical Tempranillo Blanco, it also tosses in the rarer Calagraño, Malvasia Rioja/Alarije and then the red, Graciano of all things. I can solidly state that I’ve never encountered a blend anywhere near similar to this for […] For full access, please log in or purchase a subscription .

Archaeologists Discover Ancient Beer Receipts From 4,000 Years Ago
Cracking open a cold one is a common post-work ritual across many cultures today, but archaeologists discovered the practice dates back at least 4,000 years. The National Museum of Denmark has been home to a robust collection of tablets inscribed in now-extinct languages from early Middle Eastern civilizations for over a century, but archaeologists there, along with colleagues from the University of Copenhagen, only recently began to research them. The scholars deciphered a list of kings, administrative documents, and magic spells written in cuneiform — the tablet-writing system that ancient cultures in Iraq and Syria adopted around 5,200 years ago.
