podcast· 44:41· Ep 624Ep 624: The Greats – Shiraz of the Barossa Valley, Australia
Located about 37 miles (60 km) northeast of Adelaide, at 34.7˚south, the Barossa Valley is mainly a red wine region (I don't consider Eden Valley in this show – it has one great wine but the region is not a "Great" in my estimation) and Shiraz is half of the vineyard. As the first wine to put Australia on the international wine map, the Barossa is unapologetically bold and big in style – it makes still makes bold, rich Shiraz from a warm climate and soils suited for this style. Photo: Barossa Valley Credit: Cirillo Wines In this show, I go over the history, which starts in 1842, discuss the terroir of the region, the winegrowing and winemaking conditions, food pairings, producers, and I discuss the ups and downs of this famed region, which still has productive vines from the days of the colonists. Barossa is a fascinating place, that is ever-evolving. It embodies the Australian winemaking ethos of relentless adjustment, merging tech and tradition, and making wine that is uniquely Austr

Heaven Hill 90th Anniversary Bourbon Review: Just Another Premium Dupe?
“Nothing more completely baffles one who is full of trick and duplicity than straightforward and simple integrity in another.” – Charles Caleb Colton Did you think this was another one of those legendary Heaven Hill Heritage Collection releases at first glance? I did too—and didn't hesitate to spend the $150 that was asked of me at the register when one of my local stores got a few bottles in. It's a simple mistake when the marketing is so similar. They both come in a blue box, though the...

videoWarm Climate Whisky: How Adelaide Hills Changes Everything
Most people associate Australian whisky with Tasmania — cool climate, slow maturation, and a well-established style. But in the Adelaide Hills, just outside the Barossa Valley, the conditions are very different. Warmer temperatures mean faster interaction between spirit and cask — but that brings both opportunity and risk. In this episode of SingleMalt TV Conversations, Rob Draper, ACS sits down with Ian Schmidt of Tin Shed Distilling Co to explore how climate, cask, and location influence flavo

videovPub Live - Independent Core Ranges - The New Thing
Wait, what? The terms “Independent’ and ‘Core Range’ do not usually sit together in whisky. Independent bottlers do their own thing - small batch or single casks. Official bottlings are from distilleries and large producers - they’re the ones who make ‘core ranges’, right? But of course for years now those lines have become very blurred. But it’s with the release of a new ‘core range’ from an independent bottler that the concept has taken on a slightly different tone: a new single malt, from a k

videoPorch Picks: Chicken Cock...We Just Had To Try Some
Today… we’re talking Chicken Cock. And before you click away—just know: the name may be ridiculous… but the whiskey isn’t. We picked up these bottles at the Kentucky Bourbon Festival, and what started as a joke turned into a legit surprise: From a 130 proof Cask Reserve that hits fast and disappears just as quick… to a Miller’s Reserve blend that might just earn a permanent spot on your shelf—we break it down the only way we know how: honest, unfiltered, and probably a little inappropriate. A bo
