videoRandy and Cheryl Phillips 2020 Oakdale Road Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles | Wine Expressed
Founded by Randy and Cheryl Phillips, Oakdale Reserve celebrates Paso Robles' distinctive terroir. Nestled in the heart of California’s Central Coast, the estate is dedicated to producing wines that showcase balance and intensity, a true reflection of Paso’s famed Cabernets. When Randy and Cheryl started their own winery, they quickly realized that they had a knack for it. Their first harvest, in 2004, was so small-scale that they crushed the grapes with their own feet! The operation has grown since then but the personal attention to detail hasn’t been lost in the shuffle, it’s improved as they made one award winning wine after another. Their wines have stolen the show at the San Francisco, Riverside, and Los Angeles International Wine Competitions; the California State Fair; Orange County, Central Coast, and San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competitions. At the same time, winemaking was stealing their hearts, too. Crafted from select vineyards, the 2020 vintage is made using traditional
podcast· 44:26· S1E178High QPR Pinot Noir from South America!
South America may not be the first place you think of for high quality Pinot Noir, but it is definitely time to start putting it on your list, especially because, as wine prices shoot up due to tariffs, these lower cost options are going to be in higher demand. Pinot Noir in places like Chile and Argentina is still relatively new, and they are making exciting Burgundian-style wines in areas you would not expect. Despite most of the wine growing areas in South America tending to be warmer weather spots, they are discovering cooler climate oases where Pinot Noir can really shine. One of the wines we tasted and reviewed this week really knocked our socks off. And, as an extra bonus, we’ll dig into just what the eff rosorange wine is - and you can decide if you want to try it. Ask Adam: Do I Have to Buy a Round if I’m Done Drinking?
Send all advice to advice@vinepair.com I was out with a group of friends for brunch that turned into afternoon drinks. Three of my friends bought everyone a round, by which point I’d had enough. But when I got up to leave, they insisted I buy a fourth round, even though I didn’t want another drink. Were they right, or was I? You are absolutely, unequivocally wrong. The Wine Makers – Chateau Montelena, Matt Crafton
Matt Crafton took over the white wine program at Chateau Montelena in 2010, then became head winemaker in 2014. The rich history of the Chateau and the part it played in the “Judgement of Paris”, cementing the New World’s place on the wine map is discussed, but we went deeper in this conversation. Spend five minutes with Matt and you can tell why Bo Barrett put him in charge, with very little oversight. Matt understands the history of this iconic winery but is more focused on where they are going today. There is no tangible “style” of their wines, every vintage is an opportunity to create the best wine ever, always with an intention to age. Most consumers know them for the Chardonnay and Cab, but the Zinfandel and Riesling are a mainstay available only at the winery. There may even be some bubbles coming down the road, a celebration of 50 years is on the horizon, something deserving of a “pop”. [Ep 380] @chmontelena
